IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In some countries today, people argue that genuine talent is not appretiated the way non talented individuals are. In this contemporary era, people are so devoted in their lives and their values are lost. In my opinion, it is right that individuals with no talent are more valued and respected.

Therefore, the reason is that people people value money more then talent. There mindset is that money can buy everything and they can live a better lifestyle. Another perspective is that they consider feilds related to talent less valuable and embarasing. For instance, an individual with good salary is considered more respectfull then that person with good talents. They get less job oppertunities, which leads people to choose other professional skills rather than Arts.

Consequently, if the field of accdemics is noticed, the same thing happen there. Arts subjects are thought to be the lowest, while other subjects like, biology, math, engineering and computer are more prioritised. Such as, when the school students have to chose their subjects, parents insists that their child choose any science subject for better career even if the kid is not willing to do that. However, these perspectives are changing but there are still some countries who are stuck under this mindset.

Thaking everything into consideration, I agree that people with talents are devalued and cosidered less important, while those with no talent are praised and respected.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the prompt by discussing why individuals with no genuine talent are often more valued in society, linking this to financial motivations and societal pressures. However, there is a contradiction in the introduction where the student states: 'In my opinion, it is right that individuals with no talent are more valued and respected', which likely meant to argue the opposite stance given the rest of the essay. Ideas are presented, such as the preference for scientific and academic fields over the arts, but they remain under-developed and are unsupported by robust evidence. Furthermore, the response suffers from a significant length penalty, as it falls short of the mandatory 250-word minimum, containing only 232 words. Consequently, these limitations restrict the task response to a Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, though the logical progression is occasionally hindered by abrupt transitions and repetitive phrasing like 'people people'. Basic cohesive devices are used, such as 'Consequently' and 'For instance', but referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly in sentences like 'Another perspective is that they consider feilds related to talent less valuable...' where the pronoun antecedent is vague. Paragraphing is attempted, but the body paragraphs group multiple distinct ideas together, such as societal financial views and academic subject choices, without clear internal structure. Overall, the organizational framework demonstrates basic coherence, warranting a Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical range is limited and frequently repetitive. Throughout the text, the student relies on basic vocabulary such as 'good', 'people', and 'talent'. There are multiple spelling errors throughout the response, including 'appretiated' (appreciated), 'feilds' (fields), 'embarasing' (embarrassing), 'respectfull' (respectful), 'oppertunities' (opportunities), 'accdemics' (academics), and 'cosidered' (considered). Attempts to use less common vocabulary are sparse and often marred by collocation errors or inaccurate word forms, such as 'non talented individuals'. Due to the noticeable spelling errors and limited vocabulary range that causes some difficulty for the reader, this merits a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are several grammatical inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as 'people are so devoted in their lives and their values are lost' and 'There mindset is that money can buy everything'. Punctuation and article usage are also problematic in places, such as missing articles before plural or countable nouns ('when school students have to chose their subjects'). While meaning can generally be parsed, the frequency of grammatical errors and awkward phrasing places this at a Band 5.0.
