Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the task and presents a clear position agreeing with the prompt. However, the development of ideas remains limited and under-developed, which keeps the response at this level. While the writer attempts to discuss how untalented individuals gain popularity on social media and how genuine talent is overlooked, the arguments lack sufficient extension and relevant supporting evidence. For instance, the discussion on social media influencers ('people on social media usually post themselves and inconvenient data') is vague and does not fully flesh out how this relates to the arts or why genuine talent fails to be valued. To reach the next level, the writer needs to provide more fully extended ideas with concrete, specific examples that thoroughly support the central arguments throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays some overall organisation with clear paragraphing, including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the progression is not always clear, and the overall flow is hindered by mechanical and sometimes inaccurate use of cohesive devices. For example, transitional phrases like 'To elaborate,' and 'Another key point is that' are used, but referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the sentence 'as they consist of their own importance in their field' where the pronoun reference is ambiguous. Additionally, paragraph transitions lack smoothness. To improve, the writer should ensure that ideas logically build upon one another with a wider, more natural range of cohesive links, and make sure that referencing pronouns clearly point to their intended antecedents to enhance the overall progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'contemporary', 'irrefutable', and 'luxurious'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty or read awkwardly, such as 'proficiently skillled', 'array of activities', 'inconvenient data', and 'acknowlwdge'. There are also issues with collocations and phrasing, such as 'gain fame and image in audience'. To move up to the next band, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, use less common vocabulary with greater precision regarding style and collocation, and eliminate spelling and word-choice errors to ensure smoother communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing exhibits a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple and moderately complex sentences. When the student attempts more complex structures, frequent errors occur, particularly with articles, prepositions, and subject-verb agreement. Examples of these frequent errors include missing articles ('in variety of fields', 'live luxurious life'), incorrect prepositions ('in array of activities', 'participate in such activity'), and awkward phrasing causing grammatical friction. Punctuation errors, such as missing spaces after commas, are also present. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex structures with improved accuracy, producing a higher frequency of error-free sentences that clearly convey meaning without causing difficulty for the reader.
