IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Although many nations in present days adapt the belief that anyone can be successful in different art forms like music, literature, acting etc., the well-being group not having any specific skills get recognized and on great fortune and likewise, the natural talents are misvalued or discouraged. I firmly agree with this view as people tend to use their networks and connections to get recognition and success.

Firstly, wealthy people utilize their networks and connections to get recognition and success. The networking among wealthy stakeholders drives the performance among other rich group of people. Which results in the word of mouth and in turns to get rapid recognition. For example, a bond with personality pursuing a body photography enables him or her to gain faster popularity and allows also allows him to generate revenue from his artworks. Here she won't have to go door-to-door to showcase his photographs for the livelihood. Furthermore, having good connections with media groups may result in publication of his or her arts.

Secondly, genuine talents are less prioritized and less valued. Furthermore, they lack platforms to show their skill. The skilled personality belonging to the low-income bracket has to endure a lot and goes through a lot of struggling phases just for showcasing his or her talent. The hardly earned chance is also undervalued and less prioritized by other people, which results in loss of self-esteem and drags down the confidence. For instance, in Bollywood, outsiders struggle and endure a lot for securing a small role, although having immense potential. Moreover, there is criticism, backlashes from the casting team, and in severe cases, they are fired from the part just because of favoritism and nepotism.

In conclusion, art is a pure form of expressing one's talent and there should be room for everyone to do it. However, in many countries, the wealthy population (having minimal talents) gets the spotlight with their connections, while the real and talented groups remain unrecognized and badly treated while performing their art. Therefore, the art must be neutral to every living being, and further favoritism and nepotism have to be strictly prohibited. Everyone has to get a fair chance.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout, agreeing with the prompt's statement. Relevant ideas are introduced, such as the influence of social networks and the struggles faced by authentic, lower-income talents. However, some ideas are under-developed or somewhat repetitive. For instance, the first body paragraph briefly mentions that wealthy stakeholders drive performance and rely on word of mouth, but this point could have been extended with a more robust, fully fleshed-out example rather than a somewhat vague reference to a 'bond with personality pursuing a body photography'. Similarly, the conclusion reiterates main points without adding fresh synthesis. To move to a higher level, the ideas need to be more fully elaborated and consistently supported throughout every single paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, and the writing is divided into distinct paragraphs. Progression is generally visible as the essay moves from networking advantages to the plight of genuine artists. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. The transition 'Which results in the word of mouth and in turns to get rapid recognition' is a fragmented, awkward construction that disrupts the logical flow. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as pronoun shifts in the first body paragraph where 'his or her' and 'he or she' become confusing. Cohesive devices are used, but they can be repetitive or rigid, such as the heavy reliance on sequence markers like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Furthermore'. To improve further, cohesive relationships between sentences need to be smoother and referencing more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task and attempts less common items such as 'stakeholders', 'nepotism', and 'favoritism'. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form. For example, the phrase 'the well-being group not having any specific skills' uses 'well-being' incorrectly in place of a term like 'wealthy individuals'. Other awkward collocations include 'great fortune', 'body photography' instead of portrait photography, and 'hardly earned chance'. There are also occasional phrasing issues such as 'backlashes' (usually singular or used as a mass noun here). These lexical inaccuracies do not seriously impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied structures like conditional and relative clauses. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but these errors rarely impede overall communication. Examples of grammatical slips include article omissions and misuses (e.g., 'adapt the belief', 'on great fortune', 'for the livelihood'), preposition errors within grammatical patterns, and awkward clause integration, such as starting a sentence with a relative pronoun fragment ('Which results in...'). Plurality and subject-verb agreement occasionally falter, as seen in 'Everyone has to get a fair chance' versus complex coordination. To reach a higher level, the writer must produce a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over articles and prepositions.
