Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 250 words, containing only 87 words. Because of this extreme brevity, the task is addressed only minimally. While the writer introduces a relevant topic regarding the arts and touches upon the idea that the industry has changed over time, the response remains extremely fragmented and under-developed. There is no clear position established in relation to whether anyone can succeed in the arts or whether genuine talent is unvalued, as the writing stops abruptly after a few basic sentences. To improve, the writer must expand their ideas significantly, provide concrete examples to support their arguments, and ensure all parts of the prompt are fully explored across the required word count.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The text demonstrates a basic attempt to organise thoughts, starting with a topical introduction about the arts. However, the information and ideas are not arranged coherently into a structured essay with proper paragraphing; the entire response consists of a single block of text with abrupt shifts in focus, moving from the dedication of artists to historical perspectives without smooth transitions. Cohesive devices are largely absent or inadequate, making the progression of ideas difficult to follow. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to group related ideas into distinct paragraphs, use a wider range of logical connectors, and ensure that referencing and transitions clearly link sentences together.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, featuring everyday terms such as 'people', 'money', and 'art'. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'signing' instead of 'singing', 'someting' instead of 'something', 'consider' instead of 'considered', 'entertainmnet' spelling errors, and 'Periously' instead of 'Previously'. These errors and the limited range mean that vocabulary struggles to convey precise meaning. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to expand their lexical range by incorporating less common vocabulary and idiomatic phrases with greater accuracy in spelling and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical structures attempted are very limited, relying primarily on simple sentences and basic subject-verb patterns. There are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and article usage, such as 'is not everyones cup of tea' (missing apostrophe), 'Art music , literature' (incorrect punctuation), and 'start making money' (incorrect tense agreement). These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader in parsing the intended meaning. To improve, the writer should incorporate a wider mix of complex sentence forms, pay closer attention to verb tenses and agreement, and ensure correct punctuation throughout the text.
