Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the prompt only minimally. While a clear position of disagreement is stated in the conclusion, the development of ideas is limited and under-developed. The arguments rely on repetitive assertions about hard work and practice rather than exploring the nuances of whether genuine talent is being replaced by unqualified people in the arts. Furthermore, the response is ten words short of the required minimum of two hundred and fifty words, which contributes to the minimal treatment of the task. To reach a higher band, the writer would need to present fully developed ideas with specific examples that directly engage with the prompt regarding public attitudes towards talent in the arts.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates some organisation with basic paragraphing, such as an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, but there is no clear overall progression of thought. Cohesive devices are repetitive, mechanical, and sometimes inaccurate, such as 'To begin with', 'To explain it', and 'thus, so that'. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the logical links between sentences and ideas. For instance, the pronoun 'they' is used ambiguously throughout the body paragraphs without a clear antecedent. To improve coherence and cohesion, the writer should ensure that ideas flow logically from one to the next and use a wider, more accurate range of cohesive devices to connect sentences and paragraphs smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The lexical resource is limited and basic, resulting in frequent errors that cause some difficulty for the reader. The writer relies heavily on repetitive vocabulary such as 'talent', 'hard work', 'famous', and 'practice'. There are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and collocation throughout the text, such as writing 'anyone cando arts' instead of 'anyone can do art', and stating that practice makes 'a perfect man' rather than bringing perfection. Additionally, terms are sometimes misused, such as 'normal too easy'. To achieve a higher band, the student must develop a broader and more flexible range of vocabulary, use less common lexical items with greater precision, and pay closer attention to correct word forms and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, consisting mainly of simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex forms. Frequent errors are present in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions, which often distort meaning and cause difficulty for the reader. Examples of grammatical errors include 'In few countries nowadays, their point of view', 'every field have need a hard work', 'they are failed many time', and 'I am completely disagree'. Punctuation is also problematic, with run-on sentences and incorrect capitalization. To improve, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex sentence structures and exercise much better control over basic grammatical rules and punctuation.
