Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response sits at a low level because it addresses the task only minimally and fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, stopping abruptly after just 64 words. While the student attempts to introduce a position by stating 'in this essay i am going to give my own ideas to why i disagree,' the ideas are severely limited and under-developed. Only a single premise is barely touched upon ('firstly, i do not agree that people with talent are not valued'), leaving the prompt completely unexplored. To reach higher bands, the writer must fully explore both sides of the argument with extended, well-supported points and meet the required essay length.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
Coherence and cohesion are restricted due to the extreme brevity of the text, preventing any clear overall progression or successful paragraphing. The response consists of an introductory fragment and a single broken sentence starting with 'firstly,' which creates an unfinished structure. Although basic linking is attempted through transition words, cohesive devices are inadequate because the essay lacks body paragraphs to connect. To improve, the writer needs to organise ideas into distinct paragraphs with logical progression, utilizing a variety of cohesive devices smoothly to guide the reader through a fully developed argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The lexical resource is limited and basic, with noticeable errors that affect the quality of the response. The student attempts some topical vocabulary such as 'mindset', 'individuals', and 'talent', but stumbles with word choice and word forms, writing phrases like 'in the act be it music' instead of 'in the arts, be it music'. There are also mechanical errors such as lowercase starting letters ('in this essay i am...'). To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, use precise collocations appropriate to academic writing, and exercise greater accuracy in word formation and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
Grammatical range and accuracy remain restricted because the response is far too short to demonstrate a mix of complex structures. The text relies on simple and faulty complex sentences, featuring frequent basic errors such as subject-verb agreement and article usage, exemplified by 'other with genuine talent are not recognize' where a plural noun and passive voice form are misused. Punctuation is also neglected, with missing periods and commas. To progress, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex grammatical structures while maintaining control over tense, agreement, and punctuation.
