IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In today's world some people believe that 'anyone can do it' when it comes to arts , music, literature etc which is quite debatable but in my opinion i do not agree with this completely as talent is either gifted through genetics or acquired through sheer determination and constant efforts and it is not something that can be bought with money.

Music, art ,literature ,acting and many more is not everyone's cup of tea, only the people blessed with this talent ace at it by consistently putting in the effort each day which will make them stand out from the rest of the crowd. For example, a kid who is born in a family full of musicians naturally has the knack for music and eventually he can also develop the same interest and follow his passion for music.

While some people are of the opinion that these days anyone can do it not justified because talent is something that cannot be bought with money , without talent even the richest of people cannot succed at literature. for instance, a person who does not have any knowledge of acting cannot succed at it,as acting is developed out of passion,so only the one's who are genuinely talented are appreciated while others re criticised .

Finally in my opinion genuinely talented people are always appreciated and valued in the society as music, literature, acting is not something that anyone can do,it is something that people are gifted with and become experts through consistent efforts and determination.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear overall disagreement and keep your response focused on whether artistic success depends on talent. The examples about a child from a musical family and someone without acting knowledge are relevant, and you also mention effort and determination. However, the task’s central claim that people without talent become rich and famous while genuine talent is undervalued is not examined in enough detail. The response mainly asserts that talented people are appreciated, without explaining how fame, money, or public recognition may work in practice. Some reasoning is also unclear, such as the claim that musical ability is naturally inherited. Develop each main point with a fuller explanation or a specific example, and address the contrast in the prompt more directly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a concluding statement. The ideas generally remain on the topic, and phrases such as “For example” and “Finally” help signal movement between points. However, progression within the paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow. The second body paragraph begins with an unclear construction (“While some people are of the opinion… not justified”), and the examples and claims are joined in long sentences with limited punctuation. The conclusion also repeats the introduction rather than drawing together the argument. Use clearer topic sentences, separate claims from examples, and make links between ideas explicit; this would make the organisation more coherent and cohesion less repetitive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for the topic, including “sheer determination,” “knack for music,” “passion,” and “appreciated and valued.” These expressions help communicate your position, and the reader can generally understand your meaning. However, the range is limited by repeated use of “talent,” “music,” and “people,” while some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “talent is either gifted through genetics” and “ace at it.” There are also spelling and form errors, including “succed” and “re criticised,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise alternatives and check spelling and collocations; for example, distinguish between natural ability, skill developed through practice, and public recognition.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “which,” “who,” and “as.” This gives the response some variety, and the main position is usually understandable. However, complex sentences are often not controlled successfully, and errors in sentence boundaries, agreement, articles, and punctuation recur. For example, “Music, art, literature, acting and many more is not everyone’s cup of tea” has an agreement problem, while “While some people are of the opinion… not justified” is an incomplete construction. Several sentences run together, as in the example about acting, making relationships between ideas harder to follow. Practise building complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use full stops to separate claims and examples.
