IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

People often argue that it is a childs play to do arts, music, literature or acting, and someone having no particular talent across these different fileds can quickly acquire a lot of money and audience. I largely disagree with this as people do need to have certain natural talent to become famous and rich in these fields.

Cheaper data, better connectivity and the rise of social media apps like youtube, instagram and facebook have brought the world together. It also led to larger audience for people creating and uploading their content through these platforms, amongst vast variety of fields. Certains words like vlogger, blogger and content creater have only come to light in the past few decades. For instance, with the prevelance of youtube, facebook, instagram and other content streaming platforms people have been able to show their talent online to a larger audience without even stepping outside their house.

People who disagree often say, that nowadays, even a random person can start creating content and become famous and rich, whereas someone with real talent is often sidlined and not recognized. I agree with this to some extent as people who aren't keeping up with posting their content to the online audience are often left behind struggling and not being able to recieve the exposure that they deserve, however talent is something that is recognized sooner or later. For example, many agenices conduct talent hunt shows every year to give people with real talent a chance they deserve.

In conclusion, talent is required to get rich and famous in different art categories, however with the prevelance of social media it has become easier to acquire audience and sign big brand deals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you largely disagree that people without talent can become rich and famous, while acknowledging that social media can give less-talented creators visibility. The discussion of online platforms and talent-hunt shows is relevant, and you address both the rise of new creators and the recognition of genuine talent. However, the central claim that talent is required is asserted more than demonstrated. The social-media paragraph mainly explains increased access to audiences, and the talent-show example does not establish that talent is eventually recognised more broadly. Develop these points with a specific example and explain how it supports your position. A fuller comparison of popularity, wealth and artistic ability would also make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The ideas generally follow a sensible order, moving from social media’s reach to the counterargument and then your qualified response. Linking phrases such as “For instance,” “however” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships between points. At times, though, progression within paragraphs is loose: the first body paragraph explains access to platforms but does not clearly connect that point to your claim about talent. The third paragraph also shifts from the opposing view to your own without fully separating or developing each step. Use clearer topic sentences and make each example’s relevance explicit; vary transitions rather than relying on a few familiar signals.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “audience,” “content,” “exposure,” “talent hunt” and “brand deals,” which makes the subject clear. There are also attempts at more specific expressions such as “prevalence of social media” and “real talent.” However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural phrases reduce control, including “fileds,” “creater,” “sidlined,” and “a childs play.” Some choices are also vague, such as “different art categories,” and “acquire audience” is not a natural collocation. Aim for accurate spelling and more precise phrasing, especially when expressing your main argument. A wider range of natural collocations would help you communicate ideas more fluently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and most of your meaning remains clear. For example, the sentence beginning “I agree with this to some extent as…” combines a concession with an explanation, while the conclusion uses a contrast between talent and social media. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, possessives and sentence construction. In “it is a childs play,” the possessive form is missing, and “someone having no particular talent … can quickly acquire” is an awkwardly constructed subject. The sentence “I agree with this to some extent as people…” would be clearer with punctuation separating the clauses. Continue practising complex sentences, checking article and possessive use, and proofreading punctuation.
