IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.
Do you agree or disagree?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 4.0)
In contemporary society, talent plays a major role in an individual's life. A segment of the population believes that anyone can do it in arts- literature, music, arts and acting which leads to people with no talent become wealthy and popular and genuine talent is not valued and appreciated. I strongly agree with the statement, because nowadays people on social media without talent become famous and no one value real talent if they aren't on such platforms.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
You state a clear position—“I strongly agree”—and identify a relevant concern: social media can make people famous while genuine talent is overlooked. However, the response addresses the topic only minimally. It gives no developed explanation of how people without artistic ability gain wealth or fame, why audiences or platforms reward them, or how talented artists are disadvantaged; there are also no supporting examples or evidence. The response is substantially below the required minimum of 250 words, which leaves the argument incomplete. To strengthen it, develop two distinct reasons, explain the consequences, and support each with a specific example before concluding.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic overall sequence: it introduces the topic, then gives your position and a reason. The phrase “I strongly agree” makes your stance easy to identify, and “because” signals a cause. However, the ideas are compressed into two sentences, with no paragraph development or conclusion, so the argument does not progress beyond its initial claim. The opening sentence about talent is also not clearly connected to the next sentence. Build a clear introduction, separate body paragraphs for your reasons, and a conclusion. Use linking expressions to show how each example supports your view, and make references such as “they” or “such platforms” unambiguous.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “talent,” “arts,” “wealthy,” “popular,” and “social media,” so the main point is understandable. However, the range is narrow and several words or ideas are repeated, particularly “talent” and “famous/popular.” Some phrasing is imprecise or unnatural, such as “anyone can do it in arts” and “no one value real talent”; this limits clarity and control of collocation. Aim for more precise expressions such as “achieve success in the arts,” “gain public recognition,” and “skilled artists.” You could also distinguish between artistic ability, commercial success, and online popularity to express your argument more accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
Your response includes a simple opening statement and attempts a longer sentence using “which leads to” and “because,” showing some variety in sentence construction. The main meaning remains understandable, but errors occur in agreement and sentence structure. For example, “people with no talent become wealthy and popular” does not fit grammatically after “which leads to”; use “which leads to people with no talent becoming wealthy and popular.” In “no one value real talent,” the verb should agree with the singular subject: “no one values.” The final clause, “if they aren't on such platforms,” also has an unclear reference. Practise combining clauses accurately and checking subject–verb agreement and pronoun references.
