IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

These days in some countires it is believed, that anyone can do it in the arts, music, literature, acting, art etc. In the end, real talent is not valued enough and people with no talent climb above them in terms of fame and money. I totally disagree with this statement.

Today, talented people can display their talent in front of the whole world without needing the support of any organization, thanks to social media. Due to social media, the world has become a global village. People can directly upload their respective content to approach the interested audience and gain fame without anyone's support. A friend of mine had a vey charming voice and liked to sing. He created his accounts on different social platforms and started uploading videos. He has become famous and also earns well.

These specific things require talent, these skills can not reach the highest ranks solely on the basis of sheer hardwork. Over the years, we have seen that music, acting, literature and art are the kind of skills which had some legends that stood alone apart from all the others just because they had such an exceptional talent that made it seem like they were born to do it. For example, my own country had a singer named Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan who is recognized as the greatest singer born in our country. He started singing from his childhood and was born with such tremendous talent that made him clearly surpass all the others.

Overall, i think talent is always recognized by the world and can not remain hidden. People with no talent can not outshine the talented as their skill set is completely from a different league comparatively. There are also many platforms for people now a days to express their talent without needing anoyone's help. Therefore, i completely disagree with the statement that people with no talent achieve more than the talented ones.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you disagree that people without talent become more successful than genuinely talented artists. You support this with relevant examples, especially the singer who built an audience through social media and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. This addresses the task and gives your argument a clear direction. However, some claims are broader than the evidence supports: for example, “talent is always recognized by the world” is asserted rather than demonstrated, and the examples do not directly establish that untalented people cannot become rich or famous. Develop the opposing view briefly and explain why it is less convincing to make the argument more fully balanced and supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The ideas generally progress from social media’s opportunities to the importance of innate ability, and linking phrases such as “For example,” “Overall” and “Therefore” help guide the reader. This is coherent, though some connections are mechanical or unclear. In the second body paragraph, “These specific things” does not clearly identify what it refers to, and the shift from social media to exceptional historical talent could be linked more explicitly. The conclusion repeats the central claim and several earlier points. Use more precise referencing and make each paragraph’s relationship to the main argument explicit to create smoother progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “global village,” “exceptional talent,” “recognized” and “surpass.” These choices help communicate your ideas, and the meaning remains clear. However, some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “climb above them in terms of fame and money,” “approach the interested audience” and “stood alone apart from all the others.” There are also spelling errors, including “countires,” “vey” and “anoyone's,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and avoid repeating “talent” and “famous” where a precise alternative would fit. For example, you could describe artists as “gain recognition” or “build a following.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause in “thanks to social media” and a relative clause in “who is recognized as the greatest singer.” Most sentences are understandable, and grammatical errors rarely obscure your meaning. Some errors remain, however: “it is believed, that” has an unnecessary comma, “These specific things require talent, these skills…” joins two independent clauses incorrectly, and “i think” needs a capital letter. There are also issues with forms such as “can not” and “now a days,” though these are primarily conventions of written form. Work on punctuation between clauses and check sentence boundaries; greater consistency in these areas would make your varied structures more controlled.
