IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Since last few decades it is seen that fake artists are appreciated much more than individuals with real skills. This phynomenon is symptomatic of people believing that it is easy to get into creative industries like music, literature and acting. Although, this may not be a big problem for most, I firmly agree with this.

Before few years, art was a specialised skill and people in that industry needed to sacrifice a lot of time and effort to persue that in life. At that time people were either not connected to art or were totally into it which made other people respect art a lot as it demands creativity and patience. Quwalli for instance is an old treditional art performed in pakistan where people sing songs with deep meanings for whole nigt which is a challanging task for a human, due to that those sinders were highly respected in the society.

In recent years, that have totally changed and even the people with no experience call themself an artist. This is mainly because of social media due to which the individuals with no skill but better luck are getting more encouragement than people who are actually devoted to art as in social media the loudest words are heard before the wisest and it eventually leads to demotivation in genuine arists. Tik-tok being a good example, is an online platform where pople show their talant and earns fame and money, Although they are not as talanted than artists who arent aware about these type of platforms.

To conclude, i firmly agree that real talent is heard and encouraged way less than loud talent and this is a result of digital tools and online fan base.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction (“I firmly agree”) and is maintained in the conclusion. You address the prompt by arguing that social media can reward people with little skill while discouraging dedicated artists, and the TikTok example makes this relevant to contemporary arts. The qawwali example also supports your point that artistic practice can require commitment and skill. However, the discussion focuses mainly on social media and gives less attention to how genuine talent is undervalued or how people without talent become rich and famous. Some claims, such as “better luck” bringing encouragement, are asserted rather than explained. Develop the consequences and support each main point with more specific reasoning or evidence.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting past and present contexts, and a conclusion. The progression from traditional artistic commitment to social-media fame is easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “Before few years,” “In recent years,” and “To conclude” help signal the stages of the argument. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, several transitions feel mechanical, and the contrast between the past and present is not always developed smoothly. The sentence beginning “Although, this may not be a big problem” is not clearly connected to the position that follows. Use more precise links between claims and examples, and make references such as “that” and “they” unmistakably clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “creative industries,” “specialised skill,” “devoted to art,” “demotivation,” and “fan base.” These choices show an attempt to discuss artistic commitment and online popularity rather than relying only on basic terms. However, spelling errors such as “phynomenon,” “persue,” “challanging,” and “talant” are noticeable, and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate: “loud talent” is unclear, while “sinders” does not convey the intended meaning. Repetition of “art,” “people,” and “talent” also limits range. Build accuracy by checking spelling and choosing precise expressions, for example, “less-skilled performers” or “online visibility,” where these match your meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “a platform where people show their talent” and a cause-and-effect structure beginning “This is mainly because of social media.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “Since last few decades it is seen” needs a more accurate time expression and sentence construction, while “people … call themself an artist” has a pronoun and number mismatch. In “people show their talent and earns fame,” the verb does not agree with the plural subject. There are also punctuation problems, including comma splices and inconsistent capitalisation after full stops. Practise accurate agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries while retaining your complex structures.
