IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary world ,people are becoming more advanced and open to many ideas. There has been an ongoing debate regarding the field of arts ,in some parts of the world less talented individuals are given more opportunities and the genuine talent is being under valued and ignored.

I firmly agree that considering arts as a field that` anyone can do it ` is generating a serious problem in society.People who are keen on singing and have all the connections and resources ,may sing songs and perform at concerts despite being average singer. On the contrary, individuals who have really beautiful vocals do not get oppotunities to even get the recognition .

Similarly ,now a days many infulencers who are already famous ,are selling their paintings by just copying other artists work in the name of art. They are just minting money on someone else's hard work and talent.Whereas ,there are various more talented people out there with their original work and no one is willing to buy from them .

Additionally ,this attitude towards arts is detrimental to arts itself .This approch is undermining the beauty and depth of arts and real artists .Real and genuine art takes a lot of time ,effort and understanding to convey its message .Todays artists who are famous and rich just because they got money and references cannot come close to the actual arists in terms of creativity and genius .However, such artists are more famous and are talked about everywhere

This is a serious dilemma, and people should not consider arts as a usual task that everyone is capable to perform . Deserving individuals should be given proper platforms to showcase their talent and the true art should be given respect and dignity .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening and remains consistent: you agree that people without strong artistic ability can gain recognition while genuine talent is overlooked. The examples of singers benefiting from connections and influencers selling copied paintings are relevant, and you also explain a broader consequence—that this attitude can undermine the value of art. This addresses the task well. However, some points are asserted rather than fully supported: for instance, the claim that famous artists cannot match genuine artists in creativity would be stronger with a specific illustration or explanation. The discussion also focuses mainly on music and painting, so the argument could be more fully developed by considering another art form or acknowledging why audiences may support popular performers.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, each body paragraph develops a related reason, and the conclusion restates your position and recommendation. Linking expressions such as “On the contrary,” “Similarly,” and “Additionally” help signal the progression. This gives the essay a coherent arrangement. At times, however, the links feel mechanical or the relationship between ideas is not fully clear. “Whereas” introduces a contrast but is separated from the preceding sentence, and the final body paragraph moves from the effects on art to a comparison of artists without a smooth explanation of that connection. Use referencing more precisely and build each paragraph around one central claim, followed by explanation and an example.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “recognition,” “undermining,” “creativity,” and “detrimental,” and these choices help communicate your argument. There are also attempts at more expressive phrasing, such as “minting money” and “beauty and depth of arts.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal for an academic essay: “usual task” does not express your intended meaning clearly, and “beautiful vocals” and “actual artists” are imprecise. Spelling errors such as “oppotunities,” “infulencers,” and “approch” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural collocations and proofread carefully; this would make your vocabulary more flexible and convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “People who are keen on singing … may sing songs” and a relative clause in “individuals who have really beautiful vocals.” The main ideas remain understandable, but grammatical control is uneven. Several sentences join independent clauses with commas, as in the opening and “They are just minting money … Whereas, there are various more talented people…”. There are also errors with articles, agreement, and sentence construction, such as “considering arts as a field” and “everyone is capable to perform.” Capitalisation and spacing around punctuation are inconsistent. Work on separating complete sentences, using conjunctions accurately, and checking article and verb patterns; these changes would improve accuracy while preserving your attempts at complex structures.
