IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Its being argued that people from the art scene are not valued nor appreciated. This is because it is believed that talentless performers are becoming rich and famous.I strongly disagree with this view.

One reason I oppose the idea that artists are not valued nor appreciated is that they have awards that recognice the talent of the individuals. This awards are given by critics and experts in the field, so they decided who is talented enough to win it. For instance, every year the acadamy awards ceremony takes place in Los Angeles and they reward actors, directors, writers and many other artist for their work in the previous year. Therefore, award season is a way to value and give recognition to artis' talent and work.

A further reason is that many artists have a lot of fans. This is also a demostration of value and appreciation from the masses. Society may feel touch by an artist's performance or talent. Being famous or rich does not mean they are appreciated by an audience. Talentless people do not endure over time. For example, if a person goes viral quickly they will need to sustain it with talent in order to stay relevant. Consequently, this new called artists need to offer some kind of talent to the audience to be relevant.

In conclusion, I fully disagree with the idea that genuine talent is not valued or appreciated, primarily because artists' talent is awarded by experts and it is also appreciated by people in the daily basis.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction—“I strongly disagree”—and remains consistent in the conclusion. You give two relevant reasons: awards recognise artistic work, and audiences show appreciation through their support. The examples of the Academy Awards and viral performers help make these points concrete. However, the response addresses the claim that talent is not valued more fully than the claim that people with little talent can become rich and famous. The point that viral figures need talent to remain relevant is useful, but it is asserted rather than demonstrated. Develop this contrast with a specific example or explain how popularity and expert recognition can coexist with occasional success for less-talented performers.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion that restates your position. Linking phrases such as “One reason,” “A further reason,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow. Some connections are less precise or feel mechanical, however. For example, “This is also a demonstration of value” refers to the preceding claim about fans, but the link between popularity and genuine artistic appreciation could be explained more clearly. The sentence “Being famous or rich does not mean they are appreciated by an audience” also interrupts the paragraph’s line of reasoning. Use clearer referencing and connect each example directly to the point it is intended to support.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “critics and experts,” “recognition,” “performance,” and “stay relevant,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, noticeable spelling errors, including “recognice,” “acadamy,” and “demostration,” which reduce accuracy. Some word choices and collocations are also awkward: “feel touch by an artist’s performance” and “in the daily basis” do not sound natural, while “new called artists” is unclear. Aim for more precise, natural phrasing and check spelling carefully. For example, you could describe audiences as being “moved by” a performance and say that artists are appreciated “in everyday life.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “if a person goes viral quickly they will need to sustain it with talent.” Most sentences communicate your ideas, but some grammatical errors remain. In “This awards are given,” the demonstrative and noun do not agree; “these awards” is needed. “They decided who is talented enough” shifts tense in a general explanation, and “many other artist” needs a plural noun. The opening “Its being argued” also needs the possessive-free contraction “It is” or “It’s.” Review agreement, tense consistency, articles, and punctuation around introductory clauses to make your sentences more accurate while retaining this range.
