IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.
Do you agree or disagree?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
To a certain extent, I agree with the statement that, unfortunately, society in general has stopped valuing the arts. It is perceived as not a skill that is acquired or God-given, but rather something a layman can succeed at too. This perception is fueled on the basis that people with little or no talent might be popular while really skillful people are sometimes undervalued. There is some truth to this statement as demonstrated by the current social media trends. In many cases, a so-called "influencer" who gains followers for whatever reasons enters the entertainment industry as either a singer or an actor. Due to their existing fan base, their viewership is already established; hence, they are cast in roles to attract that very fanbase. This leads to really talented performers not being cast because they might not have the same set of millions of followers. However, this is a herd mentality of the masses who don't know much about real arts. Their focus is on superfluous things like entertainment. But people who are actually aware of the real value of such arts are unimpressed by such antics. They go in pursuit of real talent and till today attend such shows. It is to be acknowledged, however, that such people are few in number today. Artistic intellectuality is rare to be found with people generally lacking basic sense of how important art is to our heritage and culture. If things remain the same way, the future might see a deficit in true art.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the opening: you agree to a certain extent, and you explain how social-media popularity can help people with limited artistic ability enter entertainment while more skilled performers are overlooked. The example of influencers being cast to attract their followers is relevant and supports your argument. You also acknowledge that some audiences continue to seek genuine talent, which gives the response a degree of balance. However, this counterpoint is asserted rather than illustrated, and the claim that society has broadly stopped valuing the arts is not fully established. Develop the opposing perspective with a specific example and explain more precisely how popularity affects the recognition or income of talented artists; this would make the argument more complete and convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response follows a generally logical progression: it introduces your qualified agreement, explains the influence of social media, then contrasts mass popularity with audiences who value artistic skill before concluding with a concern about the future. Linking expressions such as “however” and “This leads to” help show relationships between ideas. At times, though, the connections feel abrupt or the references are broad. For example, “such people” and “such antics” require the reader to infer exactly whom or what you mean, while “But people who are actually aware” begins a sharp shift without fully developing the contrast. Clearer paragraphing and more explicit transitions between the popularity argument, the counterpoint, and the conclusion would strengthen the progression and make cohesion less dependent on repeated general references.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range and make some effective attempts at less common vocabulary, including “undervalued,” “fan base,” “herd mentality,” and “heritage and culture.” These choices help communicate your ideas about popularity and artistic value. Some expressions, however, are imprecise or do not sound natural in this context. “Artistic intellectuality” is unclear, and “a deficit in true art” is an awkward way to describe a possible decline in artistic quality or recognition. “Superfluous things like entertainment” also expresses your point imprecisely, since entertainment itself is not necessarily superficial. Aim for more exact collocations and distinguish between popular entertainment and work of artistic merit; this would make your vocabulary more flexible and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including the contrast in “people with little or no talent might be popular while really skillful people are sometimes undervalued” and the conditional sentence “If things remain the same way, the future might see a deficit in true art.” Most sentences are understandable, and grammatical errors do not prevent the reader from following your argument. Some constructions are awkward or insufficiently controlled, however. In “It is perceived as not a skill that is acquired or God-given,” the structure is difficult to follow, and “Due to their existing fan base, their viewership is already established” has an unclear relationship between the subject and the result. Revise such sentences for clearer clause structure and more precise reference, while continuing to use varied sentence forms.
