IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

People in some regions of the world believe that anything can be done by anyone whether its music or acting, literature, art, and the result would be either of the two, untalented people become famous and rich and the talented individuals may not appreciated. I agree with the fact that genuinely talented sometimes are not valued or appreciated as much as they should.

When it comes to arts, people often get fame because of their one viral thing, indicating the fact that it's just the hit that makes them famous not because they are talented enough. Like if I take an example of Hania Aamir's latest song which hit a million revenue in the past months, keeping in mind that she was not a singer, she was an actor with a big audience and that's the reason, because of her already created fan-base, her song became popular overnight. On the other hand, a person who is new to this field, struggles a lot with music and finally releases his first song, his song wouldn't get that amount of fame Hania Aamir's song got, because that singer has no huge fan base created before so he has to struggle a lot to get recognised.

In my opinion, there should be a parameter to compare that which art suits which person so that everyone would have a chance to prove himself based on the capabilities they have so their piece of art is valued. Moreover, everyone individual would have a chance to express his art to the world.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you agree that genuine talent can be overlooked, and the example of an established actor’s song becoming popular supports your point about fame and existing audiences. This is relevant and gives the essay a concrete illustration. However, the response addresses the prompt only partly: it focuses mainly on how celebrity and fan bases affect music, rather than explaining more broadly whether people without talent become rich and famous or how genuine talent is undervalued across the arts. The proposed “parameter” for matching people to art forms is also unclear and not developed. To strengthen the response, explain what you mean by talent and fame, develop the consequences for talented artists, and support your position with a second, distinct example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction states your view, the second paragraph gives an example, and the final paragraph offers a recommendation. The contrast signalled by “On the other hand” helps connect the established performer with a newcomer. However, the progression is limited because most of the argument is contained in one long example, while the final recommendation arrives without being fully linked to the preceding discussion. Some connections are also awkward or unclear, particularly “the result would be either of the two” and the repeated explanation of the singer’s fan base. Use clearer topic sentences and divide the reasoning into distinct steps: explain the problem, show its effect on talented newcomers, then present a relevant conclusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “viral,” “fan-base,” “recognised,” “capabilities,” and “valued or appreciated.” These choices help communicate the central contrast between celebrity and artistic ability. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “popular overnight.” However, some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, including “one viral thing,” “a million revenue,” and “a parameter to compare that which art suits which person.” Repetition of “fame,” “song,” and “talented” also limits flexibility. Aim for more precise collocations and vocabulary that directly describes artistic merit, public recognition, and commercial success; this would make the argument clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a conditional example beginning “Like if I take an example” and a contrast introduced by “On the other hand.” The main meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the talented individuals may not appreciated” needs a passive verb form (“may not be appreciated”), and “genuinely talented sometimes are not valued” has awkward word order. In “everyone individual would have a chance,” the determiner and noun form do not agree. Several sentences are also long and joined in ways that make their structure difficult to follow, especially the opening and the sentence about the new singer. Use shorter, controlled sentences alongside complex ones, and check verb forms, agreement, and punctuation.
