IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts - music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated.

Do you agree or disagree?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In a few countries today, there is a prespective that änyone can do it" in some of the artistic fields such as music, literature, acting, arts etc which results in being famous of untalented people other than the real talent. I believed that is true to some extent as in the countries where only reference or commuication matters than the genuine artistic skills, there is not place for the talent.

For instance, i want to quote my own experience here. On instagram people raise their audience by influenecing them with their life style, luxuries and communication skills. There is a mind set the if we feel relate to that persons story, we tend to believe those and that gives the edge to raised their bussiness. I came across to a profile with such perameters she actually was not artist but well known influencer so her page started growing and she has started bussines of wall paintings whereas, a genuine artist in the country is tring hard to thrive and not getting any accountability.

In contrast there are the countries where art is restecped and they people acknowledge the artist for its artistic skills. In Farance , UK, and USA where there are world famous gallaries and the artists are famous of thier artistic specialities and known for their work. No body underestimates the real art. As many the literacy rate is high in those countries everone know the real cost of being artist.

Overll, it all depends upon the people you surround by.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You give a clear, qualified position: you agree “to some extent” and explain that connections and communication can sometimes outweigh artistic ability. The Instagram example is relevant and gives the argument a personal, concrete illustration. You also address the contrasting view by referring to countries where artists are respected. However, that comparison is asserted rather than demonstrated: naming France, the UK and the USA and their galleries does not fully explain how genuine talent is recognised or valued there. The conclusion, “it all depends upon the people you surround by,” is also too brief to bring your position and main reasons together. Develop the contrast with a specific example and make the conclusion directly answer whether you agree.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present contrasting situations, and a short conclusion follows. The Instagram example is placed in a logical paragraph, and “For instance” and “In contrast” help signal the relationship between ideas. At times, however, connections are mechanical or unclear. The opening sentence is crowded, while the shift from the influencer’s popularity to her wall-painting business needs a clearer explanation of how this supports the claim about talent being undervalued. The final paragraph introduces a broad comparison but does not develop it, and the conclusion does not clearly refer back to both sides. Use clearer topic sentences and link each example explicitly to your central argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt vocabulary suited to the topic, including “genuine artistic skills,” “influencer,” “artistic specialities,” and “literacy rate.” These choices show an effort to discuss art, popularity and public appreciation rather than relying only on basic terms. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning less precise: “prespective,” “commuication,” “perameters,” and “accountability” do not accurately express the intended ideas. Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “raise their audience” and “famous of their artistic specialities.” Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise terms such as “build a following,” “gain recognition,” and “artistic merit” would help express your ideas clearly and appropriately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You use both simple statements and attempts at longer, more complex sentences, for example the sentence beginning “On Instagram people raise their audience…” and the contrast introduced by “whereas.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the main meaning is generally understandable. However, several sentences contain errors in sentence construction, verb forms, agreement, articles or punctuation. For example, “there is not place for the talent” needs an article, and “she has started bussines” has an incomplete noun phrase. The sentence beginning “In Farance, UK, and USA” is also not a complete, well-formed sentence. Practise building complex sentences around a clear main clause, and check articles, verb forms and sentence boundaries during revision.
