Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which negatively impacts the score. While you have attempted to describe the process, the description is quite superficial and lacks the necessary detail required for an Academic Task 1 report. You have identified some stages, but the explanation of how the water clock actually functions is unclear and lacks technical precision. To improve, you should focus on describing the physical components and the sequence of actions more accurately, ensuring that the reader can fully understand the mechanism based on your text alone. The introduction and conclusion are repetitive and do not add significant value to the report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the logical flow between sentences is often disjointed. You use some cohesive devices like 'Initially', 'Next', and 'Following this', but they are sometimes used mechanically or incorrectly. The repetition of phrases like 'the process is completed' and 'every stage contributes' creates a sense of circularity rather than progression. To improve, ensure that each sentence builds logically upon the previous one and avoid repeating the same introductory or concluding statements. The use of referencing (e.g., 'this process') is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to follow the sequence of the diagram.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive, which restricts your ability to describe the technical process effectively. Phrases like 'water is tap on' and 'unclear water' are inaccurate and suggest a lack of control over basic collocations. You rely on simple, high-frequency words, which prevents you from demonstrating the range required for a higher band. To improve, focus on learning technical vocabulary related to processes and mechanisms, such as 'inlet', 'reservoir', 'discharge', and 'graduated'. Additionally, work on using more precise verbs to describe the movement of water and the interaction between the components of the clock.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with verb tense, article usage, and sentence structure. For example, 'water is tap on' should be 'the water is turned on', and 'All stage are important' should be 'All stages are important'. Your sentences are mostly simple, and there is a lack of complex structures. The punctuation is also inconsistent, with some sentences starting with lowercase letters or being fragmented. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice, which is essential for describing processes. Practising the construction of complex sentences using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions will also help.
