IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the process for making a water clock.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
HOW TO BUILD YOUR OWN WATER CLOCK
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram illustrates the process of how to construct our own water clock using plastic water bottles.
Overall, we are going to construct our own water clock using waste materials in do it yourself method. It is very simple and using 7 stages to build a water clock which was described by the university lecturer.
First of all, take an empty plastic bottle and pin a hole in bottom of the bottle and tick the straw in head of the bottle using glue. Place the bottle on top of the stand and rap the bottle using tape. Similarly, take another plastic bottle, cut off the neck and place it in the stand below the top bottle. Take a measurement using pen or pencil to calculate the levels per minute. These are the procedure to build a water clock.
Next, there are 7 stages to calculate the time. Firstly, place the water clock below the water tap and turn on slowly drop by drop. Second and third step cover the bottom hole of the top plastic bottle using your finger and wait for top bottle to overflow. you can see the overflow via straw and forth step is maintain the level constant. Removing our finger away from the hole is followed by fifth step. The water flows down drop by drop into the cut off plastic bottle. In the sixth step, measure the levels how much the water filled in the cut off plastic bottle per minute. Final step empty the filled water and repeat the process for timing things.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main stages of the process, but the description is somewhat disjointed. While you identify the seven stages, the explanation of the construction and the calibration process is occasionally confusing. For example, the instruction to 'tick the straw in head of the bottle' is unclear, and the distinction between the construction phase and the calibration phase is blurred. To reach a higher band, ensure that the sequence of actions is described with greater precision and that the relationship between the components (the two bottles and the straw) is clearly explained for a reader who cannot see the diagram.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'First of all', 'Next', and 'First/Second/Third'. Some transitions feel forced, and the logical flow between sentences is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'These are the procedure to build a water clock' appearing in the middle of the text. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence flows naturally into the next would significantly enhance the coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision required for a technical description. There are several instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'tick the straw' (likely meaning 'stick' or 'insert') and 'rap the bottle' (likely meaning 'wrap'). The phrase 'timing things' is also too informal for an academic report. While you successfully use terms like 'constant' and 'measurement', the overall range is limited. To improve, focus on using more precise verbs and technical nouns related to the process, and ensure spelling is accurate to avoid confusion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('These are the procedure'), incorrect preposition usage ('in bottom of the bottle'), and awkward phrasing ('Removing our finger away from the hole is followed by fifth step'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some missing articles and capitalization errors. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for small grammatical slips would be beneficial.
