IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows the process for making a water clock.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.

HOW TO BUILD YOUR OWN WATER CLOCK

HOW TO BUILD YOUR OWN WATER CLOCK

Student answer (Band 9.0)

The diagram illustrates the process of constructing and operating a simple water clock.

Overall, the process involves seven stages, beginning with filling a plastic bottle with water and ending with emptying the measuring container so that the procedure can be repeated. The water level is maintained at a constant height to ensure accurate time measurement.

Initially, the hole at the bottom of the upper plastic bottle is covered with a finger while the bottle is filled with water until it overflows. A straw is attached near the top of the bottle using glue, allowing excess water to escape and ensuring that the water level remains constant throughout the process. The bottle is then secured to a vertical stand with tape.

Next, the finger is removed from the hole, allowing water to flow steadily into a second plastic bottle positioned beneath it. This lower container, whose neck has been cut off, is marked with measurement lines indicating the water level reached after each minute. As water gradually accumulates, the increasing water level can be used to measure the passage of time. Finally, once the lower bottle has been filled to the required level, it is emptied, and the entire process is repeated for future use.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 9.0

The response fully addresses the task requirements by describing the process of building a water clock clearly and logically. You have identified all key stages, from the initial setup of the upper bottle to the final measurement and resetting process. The overview provided in the second paragraph effectively summarizes the core mechanism, specifically mentioning the constant water level, which is a crucial detail. The information is well-selected and accurately reflects the provided diagram. There are no omissions, and the description is sufficiently detailed to allow a reader to understand the entire procedure without needing to refer back to the image constantly. This is a comprehensive and accurate report.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The essay is well-organized with a clear introduction, a concise overview, and two body paragraphs that follow the chronological order of the process. The progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow. You have used a good range of cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'Next', 'As water gradually accumulates', and 'Finally', which help guide the reader through the steps smoothly. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the preparation phase from the operational phase. The referencing is clear, and the flow between sentences is natural, contributing to a coherent and well-structured response that meets the requirements for a high band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 8.5

You have demonstrated a strong command of vocabulary, using precise terms relevant to the process, such as 'constructing', 'maintaining', 'accumulates', and 'vertical stand'. The language is natural and appropriate for a technical description. There are no noticeable errors in word choice or collocation. While the vocabulary is accurate and functional, incorporating a few more sophisticated or less common lexical items related to mechanical processes could elevate the response further. However, the current range is more than sufficient to convey the information with precision and clarity, meeting the criteria for a high band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 9.0

The response exhibits a high level of grammatical control. You have successfully employed a variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of participial phrases ('allowing excess water to escape', 'positioned beneath it') and relative clauses ('whose neck has been cut off'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly to manage complex information. There are no significant grammatical slips, and the control over tense and voice is consistent throughout the report. The writing is fluent and demonstrates a sophisticated grasp of English grammar, which is characteristic of the higher band levels.
