The diagram below shows the process for making a water clock.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
HOW TO BUILD YOUR OWN WATER CLOCK
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the making procegure of a clock with the help platic bottles and water. At a glance, plastic bottle at the top is attached to a L-shaped bar with the help of tape.
To dive into specifics, tap is opened while covering the hole at the bottom part of the upper plastic bottle so that it can be filled upto certail level. Once water starts dripping out from the straw attached on the upper part of the bottle finger covering the hole is removed. After that, water starts falling into the second plastic bottle(neck of the bottle is removed) at the bottom of the system. It is marked with several levels. Furthermore, those levels helps to count the minutes as each level filled with water indicates one minute. This process continues untill the the second bottle is completely filled. Once the bottle is full the water stored inside is removed in order to cound more minutes and thus the process coninues.
Overall. the setup includes two modified plastic bottles, one with hole and straw and another with remoevd neck. After fulfilling all conditions minuets are counted as the water completes each level marked on the second bottle.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully identifies the main stages of the process. You have clearly described the setup and the functional mechanism of the water clock. However, the description is slightly repetitive in the second paragraph, and some details, such as the specific role of the L-shaped bar or the exact nature of the 'levels', could be more precisely integrated to show a deeper understanding of the diagram. The overview is functional but could be more concise to avoid repeating information already presented in the body paragraphs. Overall, the response covers all key aspects of the process effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, a body paragraph detailing the process, and a summary. You use cohesive devices such as 'To dive into specifics', 'Furthermore', and 'Once', which help guide the reader through the steps. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by separating the setup description from the operational steps. Referencing is generally clear, though the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to avoid redundant information.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'dripping', 'modified', and 'system'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'procegure', 'platic', 'certail', 'untill', 'cound', and 'minuets'. These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not significantly impede communication. To reach a higher band, you should focus on accuracy in spelling and attempt to use more precise technical vocabulary related to mechanical processes, such as 'calibrated' or 'graduated' instead of 'marked with several levels'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as missing articles ('with the help of tape', 'with hole') and minor subject-verb agreement issues ('those levels helps'). Punctuation is occasionally inconsistent, particularly with parentheses and spacing. While you attempt complex sentences, the frequency of minor errors prevents the writing from being considered highly accurate. Focusing on proofreading for articles and basic verb forms will help improve your score.
