Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to describe the process, but it fails to provide a clear overview or a logical summary of the stages. While it mentions seven stages, the description of the process is fragmented and lacks the necessary detail to explain how the water clock actually functions. The instructions are presented in a confusing manner, making it difficult for the reader to follow the steps. Key information, such as the purpose of the water clock or the relationship between the components, is not clearly articulated. To improve, you should provide a clear introductory overview and describe the steps in a logical, sequential order using appropriate signposting language.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into short, disjointed paragraphs that lack logical progression. While some cohesive devices are used, such as 'firstly' and 'secondly', they are often used incorrectly or in a way that does not improve the flow of the text. The referencing is frequently unclear, and the transition between ideas is abrupt. The final paragraph is redundant and does not contribute to the overall coherence of the report. To improve, focus on using a wider range of cohesive devices more accurately and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that links logically to the next.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, often relying on basic or inaccurate word choices. For example, 'made your own' is informal, and 'constact level' appears to be a misspelling of 'constant'. There is a lack of technical or precise vocabulary required to describe a mechanical process effectively. Phrases like 'finger away from the hole' are overly simplistic and do not reflect the academic tone expected in an IELTS Task 1 report. To improve, focus on learning topic-specific vocabulary related to processes and mechanisms, and work on using more precise verbs and nouns to describe actions and objects.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with sentence structure, such as 'Image shows that how to made your own water clock', which is grammatically incorrect. Subject-verb agreement and article usage are inconsistent throughout the text. The range of structures is very limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences with some awkward attempts at complexity. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, including correct verb tenses and word order. Proofreading for common errors like missing articles and incorrect verb forms will also help to improve your accuracy significantly.
