Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response addresses the task only minimally. While the student attempts to describe the process of making a water clock shown in the diagram, the information is presented in a very confused and disjointed manner. Key features of the diagram, such as the seven numbered stages (e.g., tap on, covering the hole with a finger, filling the top bottle, and calibrating the lower container), are poorly outlined and conflated with physical descriptions of the equipment. There is a lack of clear selection and reporting of the main trends or stages, resulting in a response that fails to adequately cover all parts of the visual prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
Information and ideas are not arranged coherently. The text is broken into short, erratic paragraphs that lack logical progression and clear overall sequencing. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, with clumsy transitions such as 'Additionally, it is noticeable that' failing to guide the reader smoothly through the stages of the diagram. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it very difficult to follow which bottle, stand, or part of the apparatus is being referred to at any given time.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple terms like 'bottle', 'cut', and 'water'. There are numerous word choice, collocation, and word formation errors throughout the text, such as 'water making', 'joint on down', 'stopped teh water leekage', and 'wastage of water'. These lexical inaccuracies and non-standard word forms strain the reader and impede clear communication, reflecting a very limited control of vocabulary for an academic report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, consisting largely of poorly formed, run-on sentences. Grammatical errors are frequent and often distort the meaning. There are persistent issues with verb forms, tense consistency, missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and faulty relative or coordinate clauses, such as 'one tap in which some water drops are come' and 'that procedure repeat when do empty this water bottle.' Punctuation is also problematic, contributing to the overall lack of grammatical control.
