Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to describe the process of making a water clock, but it only addresses the task partially. While it mentions several materials and steps shown in the diagram, such as the stand, plastic bottles, straw, and tape, the information is presented in a fragmented and minimal way. Key stages, such as the overall sequence of operation and the specific details of calibration, are unclear or poorly communicated. The overview of the process is weak, and the description relies heavily on lifting or listing details rather than presenting a coherent, well-developed report suitable for an academic context.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organization with chronological markers like 'First of all', 'Secondly', and 'At the end', but the overall progression lacks clarity and logical flow. The text is written as a single block or poorly structured paragraphs, making it difficult for the reader to follow the sequential steps of the diagram easily. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or repetitive, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as when shifting abruptly between the upper and lower bottles. This results in a choppy structure that disrupts the overall readability of the report.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Words such as 'strow' (straw), 'pencel' (pencil), 'Alonge' (along), 'trun' (turn), and 'repeart' (repeat) show issues with spelling. Additionally, phrasing is frequently unnatural, such as 'tap water' instead of 'running water' or a tap being turned on, and 'put bottom' instead of 'placed at the bottom'. While basic terms for equipment are attempted, the range is restricted and lacks the precision required for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The writing demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and imperative instructions rather than formal report writing constructions. Attempts at complex sentences or clauses are frequently faulty, seen in phrases like 'how to build your own water clock' used as a noun clause without integration, or 'than water level start per minute'. There are frequent errors in verb forms, prepositions, and articles, such as 'all steps clearly shows' (subject-verb agreement), 'cut from neck' (missing article), and 'fill top bottle overflow'. These errors occur throughout the text and require effort from the reader to decode.
