IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the process for making a water clock.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
HOW TO BUILD YOUR OWN WATER CLOCK
Student answer (Band 5.0)
This diagram, elaborates the way how to build a water clock, and the process this water clock works.
Overall, there are 7 stages for this process.Tap on, cover hole with finger, fill top bottle to overflow, level constant, finger away from hole, levels per minute and then repeat the process for timing thing. This all thing is cheap and can be made easily. There is a stand, which can be made of metal and 1 single straw is used, Whereas, one tap and a straw.
By looking at the details, first process is opening the tap which can be of a certain level. Then we need to cover the below wholes 2 and 5, until water starts dropping from the straw. Then we need to remove fingers away from the wholes that, water can be dropped from these wholes to a lower water bottle, which neck has been cutted down.
By analyzing the remaining information, we can see that the second water bottle is also made from plastic, and has been cutted from top as I have mentioned. And the next process is measure levels per minute of water dropping. Then at last empty the bottle and repeat the process to know about timings. This is the overall process of making and knowing time from water clock.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the seven stages and describe the basic sequence from turning on the tap to repeating the process, so the report is recognisably about the diagram. However, coverage is only partial because several important details are omitted or misreported. For example, the upper bottle is filled until water overflows through the side straw, and the lower bottle is marked with calibration lines; these features are not clearly explained. The claim that holes 2 and 5 are covered is inaccurate: the numbered stages refer to covering the hole with a finger and later removing it, not to two holes. The stand is not specified as metal, and the report does not explain how the levels per minute are used. Focus on accurately describing the apparatus and the key stages rather than adding unsupported details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, and it generally follows the process from beginning to end. This gives it some organisation. However, progression is not consistently clear: the overview lists the stages in a compressed sequence, while the later paragraphs repeat parts of that sequence without clearly separating construction from operation. Linking phrases such as “By looking at the details” and “By analyzing the remaining information” are repetitive and do not show the relationships between steps precisely. References such as “these wholes” and “this all thing” also make it harder to follow what is being described. Group the apparatus details first, then explain the numbered stages in order, using clear references such as “the upper bottle” and “the outlet hole.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-related vocabulary, including “stand,” “straw,” “overflow,” “plastic bottle” and “levels per minute,” which helps communicate the general subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making the description unclear. “Wholes” is used where “holes” is intended, and “cutted down” is not an appropriate way to describe the lower bottle; “with its neck cut off” would be clearer. Phrases such as “timing thing” and “this all thing” are vague and informal for a report. Aim for precise process vocabulary and consistent terms for the components, rather than repeating general words such as “process” and “thing.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer clauses, but control is uneven, and errors occur frequently enough to affect clarity. For example, “the way how to build” combines two structures incorrectly, while “which neck has been cutted down” has problems with the relative clause and verb form. There are also errors in articles and sentence construction, as in “first process is opening the tap,” and punctuation is sometimes faulty, including the run-on “process.Tap on.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some require the reader to work out the intended meaning. Practise accurate passive forms for process descriptions, such as “is attached” and “is marked,” and check each sentence for complete structure and correct verb forms.
