IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the process for making a water clock.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below.
HOW TO BUILD YOUR OWN WATER CLOCK
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram shows information about the process how to make water clock.
Overall, it can be seen that there are several parts of the clock. Main three part are Tap where water come. Next is Plastic bottle that is attached with stand this and last one is the bottom flask.
Basically, the water clock is attached to the stand where all the parts of the water clock are attached. Water come from the Tap. Below the water tap placed a plastic bottle. In the bottom of the plastic bottle there is a hole. Open the tap pour water into the plastic bottle. Place a finger on the hole and fill the bottle till the level constant.
Below the plastic bottle place a bottom flask where water collected. Now remove finger from the hole and start timer and note the time till the plastic bottle empty. Repeat the process again and again and note time

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main components and describe the broad sequence: water enters the upper bottle, flows into a lower container, and the process is repeated. However, the account only partially covers the diagram and some details are inaccurate or unclear. For example, the straw fixed near the top, the stand and tape, and the calibration marks made on the lower bottle are omitted. The instruction to cover the hole while filling until water overflows, then remove the finger, is not clearly distinguished; “fill the bottle till the level constant” changes the stated stage. The timing function is also imprecise: the diagram says to mark levels per minute and repeat for timing things. A clearer overview and more accurate coverage of these key stages would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure, with an opening, an overview, and a description of the process. It also uses a few sequencing expressions, such as “Below” and “Now,” so the reader can follow the general movement from the tap to the lower container. However, progression is not consistently clear: the description moves between the apparatus and the steps, and “Basically” introduces information that partly repeats the overview. Some links are awkward or unclear, including “attached to the stand where all the parts … are attached” and “Below the plastic bottle place a bottom flask.” Organising the stages in numbered or clearly sequenced order, and using references such as “the upper bottle” and “the lower container” consistently, would make the account easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough basic vocabulary to identify the main objects and actions, including “tap,” “plastic bottle,” “stand,” “hole,” “finger,” and “repeat.” This gives the reader a general understanding of the process. However, the range is limited and several choices are imprecise or repetitive. “Bottom flask” does not accurately describe the lower plastic bottle, while “water come” and “water collected” are not natural descriptions of the flow. Repeating “plastic bottle” and “water clock” also makes the account less precise. Use process-specific terms such as “upper container,” “reservoir,” “overflow,” and “calibration marks,” where appropriate, and choose verbs such as “drips” or “flows” to describe what happens.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response mainly uses short, simple sentences and attempts a few longer instructions, for example, “Place a finger on the hole and fill the bottle till the level constant.” However, frequent errors in sentence structure, verb forms, and agreement sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. Examples include “The process how to make,” “Water come from the Tap,” and “Below the plastic bottle place a bottom flask where water collected.” Articles and sentence boundaries are also inconsistent, as in “Below the water tap placed a plastic bottle.” Try using complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement and tense—for example, “Water flows from the tap into the upper bottle.” More accurate control of these basic patterns would improve clarity.
