Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response follows the diagram’s seven-stage sequence and includes several relevant actions, such as covering the hole, filling the upper container, removing the finger and checking the water level each minute. This gives the report a clear connection to the task. However, some important details are missing or unclear: the two-bottle arrangement, the lower bottle’s role in collecting water, and the straw’s function as an overflow drain are not explained. “Fill the container to top” also omits that it is filled until water overflows, while “level the water by keeping it stationary” does not accurately convey maintaining a constant level. A more complete account of the apparatus and the purpose of the stages would make the description more fully informative.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The numbered steps provide a basic sequence, and the reader can generally follow the process from turning on the tap to repeating it for timing. The opening also attempts to introduce the purpose and equipment. However, the response has no clear paragraph structure, and the long opening combines the clock’s purpose, the number of steps, and a warning about errors before moving abruptly to the materials. Repeated labels such as “Step no 1” help with order but do little to connect or group related information. Some transitions are awkward, and the final instruction is difficult to interpret. Organise the report into an introduction and overview, a short description of the apparatus, and logically grouped stages, using clear links between them.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “water tap,” “containers,” “straw,” “stand,” and “level of water,” so the basic subject is identifiable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or phrases are inaccurate or unclear, such as “straw techniqally attached,” “observe time thing,” and “movement of the hands of a normal clock determines the time.” Spelling errors, including “diagramme,” “Basiacally,” and “follwed,” also reduce control and can slow the reader. Aim for precise process vocabulary and natural collocations rather than adding an unclear explanation of how an ordinary clock works. For example, describe the straw as an overflow outlet and the lower bottle as the water-collecting container.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts a few longer structures, including a conditional warning about missing a step, but most instructions are short and several longer sentences are difficult to follow. Errors are frequent in sentence formation, verb forms, articles and punctuation. For example, “the one step of this process has been missed then there would be an error” has an incomplete conditional structure, while “first of all on the tap” lacks a correctly formed imperative verb. The opening also runs several ideas together without clear sentence boundaries. Use consistent imperative forms for the stages, such as “Turn on the tap” and “Cover the hole,” and check each sentence for a complete subject and verb. Clear full stops and commas would also improve readability.
