IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries, it can be very difficult for people over the age of 50 to get good jobs, despite their experience.
What do you think are the causes of this problem, and what measures could be taken to solve it?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, it is becoming harder and harder for people older than 50 to get employed, no matter their past work experience. The main causes of this problem might be the age discrimination, as well as the technological development in recent years. I believe the most effective solution is in the hands of the government.
One of the main problems is definetely age discrimination. When employers go throught CVs, they tend to prefer younger candidates for employment. One reason is because they believe the new generation is more educated. Another key factor is that younger people understand and work with new techologies way better than older candidates do. When an employer sees two candidates one of which is technology educated, but has no experience, and another who has the opposite qualities, they will choose the first one, who is often the younger one.
The very difficult finding of good jobs for people over the age of 50 is a very serious problem, which needs instant solution. In my opinion the major role is in the hands of the government. One thing they can do is to make stricter policies about age discrimination. For example, employers should not look at people's age, but at their qualities. Another thing employers could do is to organise courses, where older people can improve their technological skills.
In conclusion, I believe that the employment of older people is becoming harder avery moment, which should change as soon as possible. I understant why employers might prefer younger people, but exept of discriminating past generations, we should help them learn and become better.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the question and give a clear overall view that government action is important. Age discrimination and employers’ preference for candidates with stronger technology skills are relevant causes, while stricter policies and training courses are suitable measures. The example comparing a technology-skilled candidate with an experienced one helps illustrate the hiring issue. However, some points need fuller explanation: the claim that younger people are “more educated” is asserted rather than supported, and the proposed courses are not clearly assigned to employers or government. Develop each cause and measure with a brief explanation of how it affects hiring or improves older workers’ prospects.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for causes and solutions, and a conclusion. The progression from age discrimination to technology skills, then to possible interventions, is easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “One reason,” “Another key factor,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. This organisation is effective, though some connections are mechanical and a few references could be clearer. For example, “the first one” and “the opposite qualities” require the reader to look back to identify the candidates’ attributes. Use more precise references and connect the solutions explicitly to the causes they address.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “age discrimination,” “candidates,” “policies,” and “technological skills.” There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “stricter policies about age discrimination.” However, several spelling errors—“definetely,” “throught,” “techologies,” and “understant”—are noticeable, and some expressions are unnatural or imprecise, such as “technology educated” and “the very difficult finding of good jobs.” These choices make the writing less fluent and precise, although the intended meaning remains understandable. Check spelling carefully and learn natural collocations for employment and skills.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “a very serious problem, which needs instant solution” and a conditional structure beginning “When an employer sees two candidates.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles and sentence construction: “the age discrimination” would normally be “age discrimination,” and “One reason is because” is an awkward construction that could be revised to “One reason is that.” The sentence about the two candidates is also long and difficult to control. Aim for clearer clause structure and check article use, while continuing to use complex sentences.
