IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries, it can be very difficult for people over the age of 50 to get good jobs, despite their experience.

What do you think are the causes of this problem, and what measures could be taken to solve it?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In some societies, it is difficult for the elderly to get good jobs, regardless of their experience. The cause of this issue might be related to technology. In order to address it, the elderly needs to actively learn how to leverage new tools.

One of the primary reasons why the elderly cannot find a job is that science and technology are developing rapidly. Despite the fact that people who have already retired possess more experience and knowledge, they still cannot compete with young people who know how to use an AI-powered assistant. For instance, while a retired engineer might be able to generate a more detailed and considerate blueprint, a graduate can generate the same blueprint but use less time by using technology. In this case, not only can employing young people save time but also money, as a skilled elder employee usually requires a higher salary.

To overcome this unpleasant situation, the elderly need to proactively learn how to use various techniques, keeping up with the development. For example, they should not simply use the traditional way to submit their applications and wait for the reply from companies; instead, the elderly need to learn how to edit their curriculum vitae online while studying how to use different platforms to accelerate their work efficiency. In addition, they can even share their invaluable knowledge and experience on the internet to help younger generations improve themselves. As a result, while society will benefit from it, the elderly may even be able making a living on the internet.

In conclusion, the main reason of the elderly experiencing a hard time to find jobs is that their techniques are outdated. The elderly need to learn to use the internet as well as other technologies to adapt themselves in modern society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes (technological advancement and cost-efficiency) and solutions (upskilling and knowledge sharing). The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. However, the development is somewhat limited; for example, the argument regarding salary costs could be expanded further to explain why employers perceive older workers as more expensive beyond just salary. The position is clear throughout, and the response maintains a consistent focus on the topic. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more nuanced examples or explore the societal/corporate responsibility aspect of the problem, rather than focusing solely on the individual's need to adapt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'For instance,' 'In this case,' and 'In addition' are used effectively to link ideas. However, the transition between the problem of technology and the solution of 'sharing knowledge' could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly mechanical. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'leverage,' 'proactively,' and 'invaluable.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'the elderly needs' (should be plural 'the elderly need') and 'making a living on the internet' (should be 'making a living from'). While you attempt some less common vocabulary, the range is somewhat restricted. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to the workplace and professional development to show greater flexibility and precision in your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the main reason of the elderly experiencing' (should be 'the main reason for the elderly experiencing') and 'adapt themselves in modern society' (should be 'adapt to modern society'). While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. You have a good grasp of sentence construction, but to achieve a higher score, you should aim for more error-free complex sentences and ensure consistent subject-verb agreement, particularly when dealing with collective nouns like 'the elderly'.
