You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
In some nations, elderly people above 50 years of age find it hard to get a relevant job regardless of their experience. There are several causes of this issue such as age discrimination and changes in the workplace requirements. However, several measures can be taken to mitigate this issue.
One major cause of this situation is that employers prefer to hire younger people. Many companies believe that young people are more energetic, learn new skills quickly and are willing to work on low salaries. As a result, older people are often overlooked during the hiring process. Another major reason behind this is development of technology. Many jobs today need knowledge of computer and digital skills to work efficiently while majority of older people lack these skills because they never got opportunities to learn new software which makes them less favorable for the job market.
To solve this problem, government and employers should take strict actions. First, government should impose strict laws against age discrimination and the companies who do not follow should be banned. Secondly, there should be free programs available for older people to learn digital skills so that they can compete equally in job market. Additionally, companies should recognize the value of experience and create a mixed workplace for younger and older people so that they can learn from each other.
In conclusion, older people faces difficulties to find jobs due to lack of technical skills and discrimination based on age. However, combined efforts from government and employers such as imposing age discrimination laws, offering free learning programs and recognizing the value of experience can help to solve this problem.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying both causes (age discrimination, technological shifts) and solutions (legislation, training programs, workplace integration). The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. However, the development is somewhat brief. For instance, the point about 'younger people being more energetic' is a common generalization that could have been supported with more nuanced analysis or a specific example to reach a higher band. The position is clear throughout, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. To improve, ensure that each body paragraph provides a more detailed explanation or a concrete example to fully flesh out the arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate causes from solutions. Cohesive devices such as 'One major cause', 'Another major reason', 'First', 'Secondly', and 'Additionally' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. While the linking is functional, it is somewhat formulaic; incorporating a wider variety of cohesive devices or more sophisticated transition phrases would elevate the score further. Overall, the structure is clear and supports the development of the topic well.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'age discrimination', 'hiring process', and 'job market'. However, the range is somewhat limited and relies on fairly common language. There are instances where more precise or academic vocabulary would be beneficial, such as replacing 'good jobs' with 'lucrative career opportunities' or 'strict actions' with 'stringent regulatory measures'. The word choice is generally accurate, but there is little evidence of less common or idiomatic language that would characterize a higher band score. Focus on expanding your range of collocations and academic synonyms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips. For example, 'development of technology' should be 'the development of technology', and 'older people faces difficulties' should be 'older people face difficulties' (subject-verb agreement). Additionally, 'majority of older people' requires an article ('the majority'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on article usage, subject-verb agreement, and incorporating a greater variety of complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses or passive voice, to demonstrate more grammatical flexibility.
