You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is rapidly increasing difficult for the people over the age of 50 to get well paid and good jobs, despite of their many years of experience. This essay will discuss the main causes of this issue and also suggest some solutions.

One of the major issue is age discrimination. Many companies believe that young people are more active, energetic, adaptable and familiar to advanced technology. As a result, older experienced candidates are often overlooked during the recruitment process. Other cause is rapid changes and development in technology. There are more chances that younger employs are more likely to know about the new technologies and on the other hand, older employs have much more chances to miss the new updates and have not received adequate training for new changes. Consequently, companies prefer new younger employs who already possess these skills.

Several measures can be taken to address this problem. First, governments should introduce and strictly enforce laws against age discrimination in recruitment and promotion. Employers should be encouraged to evaluate applicants based on their abilities and experience rather than their age. Second, free or affordable training programes should be provided to help older workers improve their computer and technical skills. This would increase their confidence and make them more competitive in today's job market. Finally, companies should recognise the value of experienced employees, who can mentor younger staff and contribute to a more productive workplaces.

In conclusion, although people over 50 often struggle to find good jobs because of age bias and changing workplace requirements, these challenges can be overcome through stronger anti-discrimination policies, continuous skill development and a greater appreciation of experienced workers. By taking these steps, society can ensure that older people continue to make valuable contributions to the workforce.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The essay addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying both causes (age discrimination and technological shifts) and solutions (legal frameworks and training programs). The position is clear throughout. The ideas are relevant and logically extended, though the development could be slightly more nuanced to reach the highest band. For instance, the discussion on technological changes is a bit generalized. However, the response provides a balanced view and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively by offering concrete suggestions that directly address the identified problems.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the causes from the solutions. Cohesive devices such as 'As a result', 'On the other hand', and 'Consequently' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is logical, and the central topic of each paragraph is well-supported by the subsequent sentences, ensuring the reader can follow the argument without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for some precision, such as 'age discrimination', 'recruitment process', and 'productive workplaces'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'familiar to advanced technology' (should be 'familiar with') and 'younger employs' (should be 'younger employees'). Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the range of vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended meaning clearly and effectively. The student demonstrates an ability to use topic-specific terminology related to the labor market.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there is a good attempt at complex sentences, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as 'It is rapidly increasing difficult' (should be 'increasingly difficult'), 'despite of' (should be 'despite'), and 'One of the major issue' (should be 'issues'). Additionally, there are some minor errors in article usage and pluralization. However, these errors do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout. The student shows a reasonable level of control over basic and intermediate grammatical structures.
