IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries, it can be very difficult for people over the age of 50 to get good jobs, despite their experience.

What do you think are the causes of this problem, and what measures could be taken to solve it?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

After a certain age, people find it difficult to get employed in a good corporation despite of having a significant experience. Some companies prefer young generation due to their potential and dedication.

On the one hand, the people who are elder, have more work experiece and can boost the growth of the company with their previous knowledge. They have more stamina and can tolerate the crisis. Moreover, they can work under pressure due to their age factor, they may have developed an emotional stability and take decisions rationally. However, sometimes they have no flexibility in their thoughts and they work only in conventional manners. They do not readily accept the challenges and sometimes they cannot complete the tasks within deadlines. Moreover, due to their work experience they demand relatively more salaries and allowances. In addition to this, they hardly accept challenges and cannot take bigger steps for future progress.

On the contrary, the youth have more potential, new ideas and can work while using latest technological tools. They can work with advanced ideas and ready to accept the changes. Furthermore, they are devoted and passionate about their future so they can struggle a lot. By contrast, they are usually underpaid due to lack of experience. Moreover, they have given difficult tasks which put them under stress.

All in all, the youth have excessive potential and innovative ideas but they lack experience, while the elder people have more experience and lessons learnt from their previous mistakes but thay have less future dreams.

In my opinion, both young and old employees are essential to run a seccessful organization, where young can learn guidance from their seniors and in return they can help them in their weak areas.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes and solutions. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While you identify reasons why companies prefer youth (technological skills, lower salary) and why older workers are overlooked (perceived lack of flexibility), the 'solutions' part of the prompt is only briefly touched upon in the conclusion. To reach a higher band, you should dedicate a full paragraph to specific measures, such as government incentives for hiring older workers or corporate training programs that bridge the generational gap. The ideas are relevant but remain at a general level rather than being fully extended with specific evidence or examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the contrary,' and 'Moreover.' However, some transitions feel mechanical or repetitive, and the referencing is occasionally unclear. For example, the transition between the discussion of older workers and the conclusion is abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the internal flow within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'emotional stability,' 'conventional manners,' and 'innovative ideas.' However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and minor errors, such as 'significant experience' (should be 'significant experience' or 'considerable experience') and 'young generation' (should be 'the younger generation'). The range of vocabulary is sufficient but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Expanding your use of collocations and less common lexical items would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'despite of having' (should be 'despite having'), 'the people who are elder' (should be 'older people'), and 'they have given difficult tasks' (should be 'they are given difficult tasks'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing after commas. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions and passive voice constructions.
