Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many countries, it can be very difficult for the elderly people above the age of 50 to get reputed jobs, despite their experience. This situation creates several challenges such as financial pressure and negatively affects the productivity of tasks, but there are effective measures like changes in the company's policy and financial support to the elderly people are taken to overcome it.

One of the major problem caused by this situation is financial pressure created on elderly people. This is because if a person above the age of 50 years does not get a good job, then it will negatively affect their pay scale. For example, if an older person gets a job at a lower position such as a clerk in a company, then that person earns low income, which in turn creates financial pressure on an individual. Another serious issue is that it affects the overall result of the task. If a younger group, without enough experience perform any task, then they might end up with less productive results and outcomes because the freshers may not know how to tackle the challenges occurring during the task.

To solve these problems, the government should take initiatives to change the policy of each company and put certain criteria for people above the age of 50. If the policy includes job openings for certain elderly people at the higher positions, then the people above 50 years may get good jobs. In addition, authorities should also provide some minimum wage to the elderly people in terms of several schemes. For instance, there are certain schemes in India that give financial support for widowed women.

In conclusion, this situation might lead to putting financial pressure on elderly people and reduction of productivity in the workplace. However, these issues can be addressed by changing a policy of companies and supportive schemes. If both the government and companies make efforts then the elderly people above the age of 50 might get good jobs.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes and solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as financial pressure and the impact on productivity, and the solutions regarding policy changes and government schemes are logical. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument about younger employees lacking experience is a bit simplistic and could have been expanded with more nuanced reasoning. The position is clear throughout, but the depth of analysis is limited, which prevents it from reaching the higher bands. Overall, the response covers all requirements but lacks the sophisticated development expected at the top level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In addition', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the causes from the solutions. While the structure is sound, the flow between some sentences could be smoother to achieve a more natural, sophisticated coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task and generally conveys meaning clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific language like 'pay scale', 'initiatives', and 'financial support'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is some repetition of basic phrases like 'elderly people' and 'good jobs'. To improve, you should incorporate more precise synonyms and collocations related to employment and social policy. Some word choices are slightly imprecise, such as 'reputed jobs', which is not a standard collocation in this context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is generally good control over basic grammar, and errors do not impede communication. However, there are some recurring issues with articles (e.g., 'the elderly people' instead of 'elderly people') and minor errors in phrasing, such as 'put certain criteria for people' and 'changing a policy of companies'. While complex structures are attempted, they are not always error-free. Increasing the variety of complex sentence forms and refining the accuracy of articles and prepositions would help elevate the score.
