Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: causes and solutions. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding age discrimination is supported by a generic reference to a survey, but the explanation of why companies prefer younger workers is a bit simplistic. The solutions provided, such as government intervention and training, are relevant but lack depth in terms of how they would be implemented or why they would be effective. The position is clear, but the overall development of the argument could be more sophisticated to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'due to which may several causes'. The referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences could be improved to create a more natural progression of ideas. Paragraphing is present but the internal structure of the paragraphs could be more cohesive.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There is some repetition of basic terms like 'problems', 'jobs', and 'people'. While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'age discrimination' and 'financial stability', there are errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'energytic' (spelling error) and 'more faster' (grammatical error). The vocabulary is generally functional but does not demonstrate the flexibility or sophistication required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Examples include 'more faster', '89% people age above 50', and '8out of 10 older people gets'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with spaces before commas and periods. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable and detract from the overall quality of the writing. A greater focus on subject-verb agreement and sentence structure accuracy is needed.
