Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response addresses the prompt by identifying causes and potential solutions, but the development is very limited. The ideas are repetitive and lack depth; for instance, the argument that older people suffer from 'obesity' or 'cannot do difficult work' is not supported by logical reasoning or relevant examples. The response fails to provide a clear, structured discussion of measures to solve the problem, instead repeating the same points about the difficulties faced by older workers. The position is not consistently maintained, and the overall response is underdeveloped, failing to meet the requirements for a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the internal structure of these paragraphs is weak. Ideas are not logically sequenced, and the progression of thought is often disjointed. While some cohesive devices are used (e.g., 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', 'In conclusion'), they are often used incorrectly or in a way that does not improve the flow of the text. The referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the argument. The overall arrangement is mechanical and lacks the necessary cohesion to support a coherent argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary is very limited and repetitive. The student relies on basic words and phrases, often using them incorrectly or in unnatural collocations, such as 'not proper work on the workplace' or 'companies suffer very difficult tackles'. There is no attempt to use less common or more sophisticated vocabulary. The errors in word choice and collocation are frequent and occasionally impede the reader's understanding of the intended meaning. The range is insufficient to express complex ideas effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammatical range is very restricted, consisting mostly of simple, often fragmented sentences. There are frequent errors in basic grammar, including subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'individual over the age of 50 to get'), article usage, and sentence structure. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with spaces before commas and periods. These errors are pervasive and frequently cause difficulty for the reader, as the meaning of many sentences is obscured by the lack of grammatical control. Complex structures are attempted but are almost always faulty.
