IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries, it can be very difficult for people over the age of 50 to get good jobs, despite their experience.
What do you think are the causes of this problem, and what measures could be taken to solve it?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In different parts of the world, people over the age of 50 find it very hard to find jobs, despite having more experience. This can happen because companies prefer young adults and because of the continuous changes in technology.
To begin with, due to the frequent changes in technology, older people will find it very hard to cope with it, while young adults grew up learning new technology. As a result, older job seekers might struggle to use modern software or digital tools at work. Furthermore, businesses often prefer young adults because they are cheaper to employ. Experienced workers over 50 expect higher salaries, while younger candidates are often willing to accept entry-level fee.
To solve these problems, governments and companies need to take action. First, the government can provide free computer and digital training classes specifically for older people. This will help them learn modern skills and gain more knowledge about new technology. Second, the government can offer money or some kind of discount to businesses that hire workers over the age of 50. This will encourage the companies to hire them, despite their age. In addition, they will be able to get paid according to their experience and also get the recognition they require.
In conclusion, people above the age of 50 find it harder to find a job, while companies hire young adults because they except less salaries and are also willing to work more hours. However, the government should look into this matter and should not let companies exploit young adults.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying two clear causes (technological change and salary expectations) and two relevant solutions (training and government incentives). The ideas are relevant and logically developed. However, the development is somewhat brief, and the conclusion introduces a new, slightly contradictory point about 'exploiting young adults' which is not fully integrated into the main argument. To reach a higher band, the student should ensure that the conclusion strictly summarizes the points already made rather than introducing new, tangential arguments. Overall, the response is clear and fulfills the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from the problem to the solution. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In addition' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing in the final paragraph is a bit weak, as the term 'this matter' is somewhat vague. Overall, the structure is coherent, and the paragraphing is appropriate for an academic essay.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at using topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'entry-level' and 'digital tools'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'entry-level fee' (should be 'salary' or 'wage') and 'except less salaries' (should be 'expect lower salaries'). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on fairly common terms. To improve, the student should focus on more precise collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'older people will find it very hard to cope with it' (the 'it' is redundant) and 'except less salaries' (a spelling error for 'expect' and a collocation error). Punctuation is generally accurate, but the control over complex structures is inconsistent. The majority of the sentences are error-free, but the errors that do occur are noticeable. Increasing the variety of complex sentence forms while ensuring accuracy would help raise the score.
