In some countries, it can be very difficult for people over the age of 50 to get good jobs, despite their experience.
What do you think are the causes of this problem, and what measures could be taken to solve it?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
In some countries, people over the age of 50 find it increasingly difficult to obtain good jobs, even though they have considerable experience. This issue is mainly caused by age discrimination and rapid technological development. However, governments and employers can take several measures to address this problem.
One major cause is that some employers prefer younger workers because they believe they are more energetic, adaptable and willing to work for lower salaries. As a result, experienced older employees may be overlooked simply because of their age. Another important factor is the rapid development of technology. Some older workers may not have sufficient digital skills, particularly when new software and automated systems are introduced into the workplace. Consequently, employers may choose younger applicants who already possess these skills.
Several measures could help solve this problem. Firstly, governments should introduce stronger laws against age discrimination and ensure that companies recruit employees based on their qualifications rather than their age. Employers should also provide regular training programmes that allow older workers to improve their technological and professional skills. Furthermore, companies could offer flexible working arrangements, such as part-time positions or remote work, which may enable experienced employees to remain productive for longer.so this is the main cause.
In conclusion, the difficulty faced by workers over 50 is mainly related to age discrimination and a lack of updated technological skills. By enforcing fair employment practices and providing opportunities for continuous training, governments and employers can help older people remain valuable members of the workforce.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying both causes (age discrimination and technological gaps) and solutions (legal frameworks and training). The position is clear throughout. Ideas are relevant and logically extended, such as the link between digital skills and employer preference. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more specific examples or evidence to support the arguments, such as mentioning a specific industry or a hypothetical scenario where these measures have been successfully implemented. The conclusion is concise and effectively summarizes the main points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'One major cause', 'Another important factor', 'Firstly', and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a central theme. The flow is smooth, although the final sentence of the third paragraph ('so this is the main cause') feels slightly disconnected and informal compared to the rest of the academic tone. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses topic-specific terms such as 'age discrimination', 'technological development', 'automated systems', and 'flexible working arrangements'. There is an attempt to use a range of vocabulary, and the meaning is consistently clear. While the lexical range is adequate, it lacks the more sophisticated or idiomatic collocations that would characterize a higher band. However, there are no significant errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. There is good control over punctuation and sentence construction. The minor error at the end of the third paragraph ('so this is the main cause') is a stylistic lapse rather than a grammatical failure. The use of modal verbs ('should', 'could', 'may') is appropriate for discussing potential solutions. The writing is clear and demonstrates a solid command of English grammar.
