Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the causes (salary costs and benefits) and the solutions (policy and financial planning). However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. The explanation regarding why companies fire older employees is clear, but the proposed solutions are slightly disconnected from the problem of hiring. For instance, suggesting pension schemes for early-career workers does not directly address the difficulty of people over 50 finding jobs. The position is clear, but the arguments could be more thoroughly extended with more specific examples or logical links to ensure a more cohesive response to the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'First', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion', which help the reader follow the argument. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly inaccurate, such as 'There effective solutions' (missing 'are') and 'Foe example' (spelling error). Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences is occasionally interrupted by grammatical errors, which makes the progression feel slightly disjointed at times. Paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could be improved for better flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward phrasing or incorrect word choices, such as 'job crisis' instead of 'employment challenges', and 'maintain revenue of company' instead of 'manage company costs'. Spelling errors like 'heath care' and 'expanses' (for expenses) also occur. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'pension scheme' and 'investment', the overall control is inconsistent, and the repetition of basic terms limits the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there is a high frequency of grammatical errors. Frequent issues include subject-verb agreement ('company has to work', 'company fire their older employee'), missing articles ('to private company'), and incorrect verb forms ('it can be solve'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. The student attempts complex structures, but these often contain errors, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band for grammatical accuracy.
