In some countries, it can be very difficult for people over the age of 50 to get good jobs, despite their experience.

What do you think are the causes of this problem, and what measures could be taken to solve it?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Humans are born with some fundamental rights. Among those, it is the right of each individual to work and earn, which must be protected. However, there are many countries in the world where it is difficult for people over the age of 50 to get work, despite their experience. In the upcoming paragraphs, reasons will be discussed behind this attitude.

To begin with, many companies do not hire old people as they believe that they cannot perform well as compared to the young staff in a company. Performances are often evaluated on the basis of inputs and the amount of time an employee takes to do a specfic take. On the basis of that, organizations claim that people over the age of 50 cannot work quickly and usually take more time for task completion.

Furthermore, in corporate sectors, hiring staff beleive that people at the age of fifty offten suffer from mental problems such as dementia. Hiring such people can cause serious damage to their businesses.

Additionally, physical health is another reason for not hiring people over the age of 50. For example, unlike a person aged 50, an individual aged 25 can uplift heavy weight easily. Therefore, companies avoid hiring people above the certain age.

Lastly, in this technological world where everything is digital, it is difficult for people over the age of 50 to work with machines or on computers as most businesses have shifted online.

The above mentioned factors illustrate why people over the age of 50 cannot get work, despite their experince.

However, by taking certain steps, this problem can be solved. As it is said that nobody is useless in this world; therefore, old people can play their role in the economy. For this, governmnets must implement policies about hiring old people on specific jobs. For instance, such people can be hired as guards and gardeners. By implementing such policies, this issue can be resolved.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing causes such as employer perceptions of speed, health, and technological skills, and proposing measures like government policies. However, the development of ideas remains somewhat superficial. For instance, the suggestion that older workers can be hired as 'guards and gardeners' is quite limited and under-developed, falling short of a fully extended argument. Furthermore, the final paragraph conflates the discussion by introducing a weak counter-argument about nobody being useless. While all parts of the prompt are covered, the lack of depth in the supporting evidence prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Overall, the ideas are relevant, but they require greater elaboration and clearer positioning to meet the criteria for Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical progression, starting with an introduction, moving through several body paragraphs detailing causes, and concluding with solutions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as physical health, mental health, and technological barriers. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or repetitive, as seen with phrases like 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', 'Additionally', and 'Lastly'. Referencing is generally clear, but the transition between the final body paragraph and the conclusion feels slightly abrupt. While the organisation is easy to follow, the formulaic use of transitional markers limits the score to a solid Band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'fundamental rights', 'corporate sectors', 'dementia', and 'economy'. There are several spelling and word-choice errors that detract from the overall quality, including 'specfic take' instead of 'specific task', 'beleive' instead of 'believe', 'offten' instead of 'often', 'experince' instead of 'experience', and 'governmnets' instead of 'governments'. While these errors do not impede communication, they highlight an inconsistency in lexical control. Less common vocabulary is attempted, but inaccuracies in spelling and collocation prevent the response from achieving a Band 7.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure. Examples of complex sentences include 'However, there are many countries in the world where it is difficult for people over the age of 50 to get work...' and '...in this technological world where everything is digital, it is difficult for people over the age of 50 to work with machines...' However, there are notable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing throughout the text, such as 'an individual aged 25 can uplift heavy weight easily' (lift heavy weights) and 'avoid hiring people above the certain age' (above a certain age). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical slips in prepositional usage and verb forms occur frequently enough to keep the writing at a Band 6.
