IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries, it can be very difficult for people over the age of 50 to get good jobs, despite their experience.

What do you think are the causes of this problem, and what measures could be taken to solve it?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

People over the age of 50 tend to face difficulties in getting a good job compared to someone middle aged, despite them having more expertise.Although a good job pays more but at the same time it demands consistent performance aswell which elder person may not be able to deliver. An elder person could have responsiblities aswell so the government must support them or their previous company from which they retired or resingned from aswell.moving on i will be sharing my views to show in what way we can help elders preserve their right to be treated equally just like the rest of us.

A good job meaning you need to be able to carry responsiblities of the company on your shoulder because a high paying job may sound like a sweet treat but also expects constant performance in return which an elder individual may not be able to do so.For example ,As one grows older above the age of 50 they start facing problems regarding their health such as, loss of memory, hearing problems etc. furthermore they cannot be put under much stress either as they have a higher probablity of burning out.

On the other hand an elder person tend to have more experience in their feild since they have been working in it for a long period of time and carry an advantage too so this fact must not be over looked by the job recruitors. The government should also introduce funding policies for the people of age above 50 which allows them to be able to take care of their basic expenses on their own. moreover for those people who are aging above 50 should be provided with a junior assistant who can help them in performing basic less complex tasks.

In my opinion people over the age of 50 should be prioristed equally in hiring if not more since they can be very helpful to the company and bring alot to the table because of their years of experience and expertise.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying potential causes such as health issues and job performance demands, and suggesting measures like government funding policies and junior assistants. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. The introduction includes meta-language ('moving on i will be sharing my views') rather than a direct thesis statement. While the position is generally clear throughout, the arguments lack depth and broader examples, placing this response firmly in Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with identifiable paragraphs addressing causes, solutions, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. There are noticeable punctuation and spacing errors throughout the text, such as missing spaces after commas and periods (e.g., 'performance aswell which', 'Example ,As one'). Paragraphing is attempted, but transitions between sentences and ideas can be abrupt or awkward. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and cohesive devices are basic, leading to a Band 5.5 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'expertise', 'probability', and 'prioritised'. However, there are numerous lexical and spelling errors that detract from the writing, including 'responsiblities', 'resingned', 'probablity', 'feild', and 'priorised'. Word choice is sometimes imprecise, and collocation is occasionally unnatural. These inaccuracies prevent the score from reaching a higher band, making Band 5.5 an accurate reflection of the lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical control is weak, with frequent errors in punctuation, capitalization, and subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'an elder person tend', 'people of age above 50 which allows'). Sentences often run together or lack proper punctuation boundaries. While meaning is generally clear despite the errors, the high frequency of structural and mechanical mistakes keeps the score at Band 5.0.
