IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries, it can be very difficult for people over the age of 50 to get good jobs, despite their experience.

What do you think are the causes of this problem, and what measures could be taken to solve it?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In most of the countries, it is very difficult for people over 50 to land a good job even if they have good experience. Most of the companies while hiring considered the age of people who shall be working in the company. Many countries want active people to be hired and they would considered teenage and young young people to work under them. There is misconceptions that after 50 people cannot be active even if they have well known experience in the certain field.

For example last year i applied for a job and i literally meet a lot of people who were older than me in the interview and were more experienced than me. and luckily i got hired just because i met the age criteria.

In my opinion, even the people who are above 50 should be given equal opportunities without considering their age. A well experience matters more than the age of the person. This will certainly help the company to grow and also influence the young people to work even in a better manner. Also it is very important for the companies to considered a proper experience for a betterment of the company's welfare and prosperity. Hiring young unexperienced people will only increase the workloads and trainings costs which might ion term leads to the economic loss of the company.

Therefore i think the workforce of the company should involve the wider range of people with different age group so that it would lead for the betterment of any company in any part of the country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the task by identifying causes, such as misconceptions about age and productivity, and proposing measures, such as valuing experience over age and promoting diverse workforces. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For example, the argument that young, inexperienced workers increase training costs is introduced towards the end but lacks deeper extension with concrete real-world evidence. The personal anecdote provided in the second paragraph ('for example last year i applied for a job') is somewhat anecdotal and shifts into first-person narrative rather than maintaining an objective academic register. Nevertheless, a clear position is maintained throughout, satisfying the requirements for Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, moving from an introduction to causes, an example, solutions, and a brief conclusion. However, cohesion is frequently mechanical and sometimes faulty. For instance, transitional phrases like 'Also it is very important' and 'Therefore i think' are basic, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'which might ion term leads to the economic loss'. Paragraph progression is visible, but the logical links between sentences could be smoother and more varied to achieve a higher band. Overall, the structural organisation aligns with the Band 6 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their ideas, but it exhibits noticeable limitations and word choice errors. Examples of awkward collocation and inaccurate phrasing include 'well known experience in the certain field' (instead of 'extensive experience in a certain field') and 'economic loss' rather than 'financial loss'. Furthermore, spelling errors such as 'unexperienced' (inexperienced) and typos like 'ion term' (in the long term) occur. While the writer attempts less common vocabulary such as 'prosperity', frequent slips restrict the score to a Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and concessive clauses ('even the people who are above 50 should be given equal opportunities'). However, control over grammar is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb forms and agreement, including 'Most of the companies while hiring considered' (consider), 'they would considered' (would consider), and lowercase 'i'. Article usage is also problematic in phrases like 'in most of the countries' and 'in the certain field'. Because these errors occasionally cause minor strain for the reader while still allowing the overall message to come through, a Band 5.5 is appropriate.
