IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries, it can be very difficult for people over the age of 50 to get good jobs, despite their experience.

What do you think are the causes of this problem, and what measures could be taken to solve it?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In contemporary society, it can be very difficult for individuals over the age of 50 to get good jobs, despite their experience due to technological changes. However, I believe that retraining programmes can solve this issue.

A particularly noteworthy cause of unemployment for people over the age of 50 is rapid technological advancement. This can largely be attributed to the fact that the technology changes swiftly, thereby putting more pressure on aged individuals. In practical terms, some employees who trained and got employed a decade ago are still using the same skills up to date, despite the advancements in technology, which can be perceived as an outdated system. This can be exemplified by the use of computers in schools, where teachers can use it to prepare lesson plans, schemes of work and storing important information. If a school decides to hire an individual above the age of 50, the employee may not be able to use a computer effectively, which may reduce the efficiency.

Nevertheless, it would be unrealistic to overlook the fact that people can always be trained on emerging issues to improve their efficiency. This is particularly significant because some training can take as short as three months, which could be emphasized instead of ignoring their potential. By having access to quality training, aged people are better positioned to job opportunities, which can subsequently lead to a better old-age life. For instance, if people over the age of 50 attend an AI training, they may be able to gain knowledge and skills, which may give them opportunities to work for several companies online.

To conclude, although it can be very difficult for people over the age of 50 to get employment, despite their experience due to technological changes, I believe that retraining them can solve this issue.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by identifying a clear cause of unemployment for individuals over 50 (rapid technological changes) and proposing a measure to solve it (retraining programmes). The student presents a clear position throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as the use of computers in schools and the potential benefits of AI training. However, the development tends to be slightly repetitive in the final paragraph, and some supporting details could be more thoroughly explored to reach higher band levels. Nevertheless, the requirements of the prompt are fully covered, matching the Band 7 descriptor well.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently structured into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as causes versus solutions. The student employs a variety of cohesive devices to link ideas, such as 'A particularly noteworthy cause', 'Nevertheless', and 'For instance'. While referencing and transitions are generally handled well, some cohesion feels slightly mechanical, which prevents the essay from reaching the higher bands. Overall, the flow of the text remains clear and easy to follow, supporting a solid Band 7 rating.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for some flexibility and precision, such as 'contemporary society', 'rapid technological advancement', and 'potential'. Less common lexical items are attempted, for instance, 'noteworthy cause', 'emerging issues', and 'retraining programmes', showing some awareness of collocation and academic style. However, there are occasional awkward phrasings or minor inaccuracies, such as 'aged individuals' (which is less natural than 'older workers') and 'better positioned to job opportunities' (missing the preposition 'for'). Despite these occasional limitations, the vocabulary is more than adequate for the task and communication is never impeded, fitting the Band 6.5 to 7.0 profile closely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over structures such as conditional sentences ('If a school decides to hire...') and relative clauses. There are frequent error-free sentences, and punctuation is handled competently throughout. However, a few minor grammatical inaccuracies persist, such as 'the technology changes swiftly' (unnecessary definite article) and 'attend an AI training' (missing a countable noun like 'course' or 'programme'). These errors are non-systematic and do not impede communication, allowing the response to comfortably achieve a Band 7 for grammatical control and range.
