IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries, it can be very difficult for people over the age of 50 to get good jobs, despite their experience.

What do you think are the causes of this problem, and what measures could be taken to solve it?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In various nations, to get employed is a difficult task for the individuals who are above the 50 years, regardless of their expertise. Although the main reasons of this viewpoint are lack of modern skills and age discrimnation in work place, there are several ways to curtail this burning issue.

One of the main cause of the problem is lack of modern skills. This is due to fact that day by day the technology is getting advanced and issues have been faced by the high-aged people for using new technology because they are not much aware about its features and usage. Another reason is age discrimination in work place. To elaborate, if person get job at the age of 50, then it will decrease the jobs opportunity for the new generation due to which they have to stay unemployed. For example, if any young person cannot find any job, then financial crisis may be faced by them due to which they get unable to fulfil the demands of their family members. Therefore, youth may face struggle to get jobs, if over 50 aged people get employed.

However, one effective solution to deal with this is the flexible working arrangements. To justify, companies can provide part-time jobs to the elder people, by which they not only get employed, but also become financially stable and they can continue working without any work pressure. Another answer is government tax incentives. To clarify, taxes can be reduced by the government for companies by which older people can get jobs. The cost of hiring have been get decreased and the can provide employment to the experienced elder people. For example, the tax could have been reduced by the government for the companies to hire workers above 50, which would encourage more buisness to emply older people. Thus, older people have more empoyment opportunities and can get financially stable.

To conclude, even though there are several issues that cause this obstacle, the solution lies in flexible working arrangements and government tax incentives, which can curb this issue to a large extent.
