In some countries, it can be very difficult for people over the age of 50 to get good jobs, despite their experience.
What do you think are the causes of this problem, and what measures could be taken to solve it?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In the contemporary society, it has become a challenge even for experienced people over the age of 50 to land decent jobs, This essay will argue about the potential causes and propose solutions to overcome this problem.
Companies are actively avoiding hiring late career professionals because of a multitude of reasons. First one being the assumption that people who are more than 50 years old are less productive as comapred to early career professionals. Hiring managers nowadays are prioritizing productivity over seniority and experience. Another reason is the rise in new technological tools such as AI being introduced in every workplace. A common understanding is that young workers are more proficient in use of AI tools. Third reason is avoiding workers who will be more prone to sick leaves and other health issues disturbing companies work force balance.
Multiple measures can be taken as a solution to this problem. First of all government should impose the regulation of atleast 35% percent of workforce being 50 or above. Furthermore older working professionals should take a mandatory course on AI and other advanced tools. Moreover the companies shouldn't be allowed to lay off someone based on how often they took a medical leave. A similar law to the one which doesn't allow companies to lay off pregnant women cn be put in place for older people.
Concluding it all, older people having difficulty in landing a job is a growing problem admittedly though comapnies have reasons for prioritising younger workers but government needs regulations in place to make sure older people are not unfairly left out of hiring process to protect the society's workforce balance.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both causes, such as productivity assumptions and technological shifts, and measures, such as government quotas and training courses. However, some ideas are under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, the point regarding health issues and sick leaves is introduced in the second paragraph but lacks specific support or examples. Similarly, the proposed measures are stated broadly without explaining how they would practically function in a corporate environment. The position is clear throughout the essay, guiding the reader from the introduction through the body paragraphs to a summarizing conclusion, satisfying the criteria for this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas from causes in the second paragraph to solutions in the third. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct sections of the essay. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'First one being', 'Another reason', and 'Multiple measures can be taken', but their usage can occasionally feel mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, though transitional links between sentences could be smoother to elevate the flow further towards higher bands. The combination of a clear structural skeleton and basic cohesive devices successfully meets the lower band requirements while demonstrating organizational control.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their ideas about employment challenges for older workers. There are attempts to use less common items and topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'late career professionals', 'seniority', and 'workforce balance'. However, there are noticeable word choice inaccuracies and spelling errors, such as 'comapred' instead of 'compared', 'comapnies' instead of 'companies', and 'cn' instead of 'can'. While these minor lexical slips and spelling errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the response from achieving a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. There are several errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, such as missing articles ('atleast 35% percent of workforce') and awkward comma splices or missing punctuation, as seen in the opening sentence ('land decent jobs, This essay'). Prepositions within grammatical patterns also occasionally falter. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument without significant difficulty, which is characteristic of this performance level.
