Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by identifying causes, such as physical limitations and rapid technological advancements, and offering measures like training and government policies. However, some ideas remain under-developed or lack full explanation. For instance, the discussion on technology touches upon artificial intelligence and ChatGPT, but this point is not fully linked to how employers perceive older workers beyond a brief mention. The position is generally clear throughout, but the development of arguments is limited by superficial elaboration and a tendency to over-generalise. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to extend their ideas with more thorough explanations and relevant examples rather than moving quickly from one point to the next.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at logical progression. The writing is divided into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing causes and solutions, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'To conclude', which helps guide the reader through the text. However, some cohesive elements are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'meanwhile , young people well introduce to A I', and referencing can occasionally be unclear. The half-band strength shows a generally clear logical organisation, but to move further up, the writer must ensure that cohesive devices are used more flexibly and naturally, and that referencing between sentences is smoother without disrupting the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey basic ideas about employment and age. There are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word formation, such as 'dispite' instead of despite, 'stapes' instead of steps, 'campare' instead of compare, and 'traning' instead of training. These issues reflect a restricted control over less common lexical items. While communication is not entirely blocked, the repetition of basic words and frequent spelling or morphological slips prevent the response from achieving a higher rating. To improve, the writer needs to expand their range of vocabulary, pay closer attention to word forms and collocations, and eliminate basic spelling errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing shows a limited range of grammatical structures, relying primarily on simple sentences alongside a few attempts at complex forms. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause some difficulty for the reader, such as issues with subject-verb agreement ('our body can not work', 'employer prefer'), missing or incorrect articles, and faulty punctuation placement (such as spaces before commas and periods). Attempts at complex sentence structures often result in structural errors, such as run-on constructions or awkward clauses like 'what are the reasons that causing this problem'. To progress, the writer must work on increasing sentence variety, improving punctuation habits, and securing better control over basic grammatical patterns and verb forms.
