IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries, it can be very difficult for people over the age of 50 to get good jobs, despite their experience.

What do you think are the causes of this problem, and what measures could be taken to solve it?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is believed that in some nations it is hard for individuals above 50 years of age to find reasonable employment, despite having experience. This essay will discuss the causes of this change and the suggest measures to tackle this.

One major reason is the technological gap. The rapid advancements in AI has changed the job market, particularly older individuals. AI models and robots have been trained to perform the monotonous and repetitive jobs. Investment in this technology has aided a number of companies to reduce the cost of payments to labours leading to an increase in unemployment of the older people who are not updated with the newer software. For example, Amazon has started using robots for packaging of goods which has reduced the demand for older, less tech-savvy employees. Also, AI-automated software are now used to send cold emails instead of real people.

To deal with this rapidly rising problem of unemployment, governments should impose strict action against age discrimination at jobs, and offer tax incentives to companies hiring individuals over 50. They should also start initiative of teaching older people computer-based skills to make them fit for the demands of the recent job market. This would bridge the gap between generations as younger generation is widely thriving because they are being taught about it in the educational institutes; the older generations had to bear the brunt of it.

To conclude, although older workers face challenges due to technological changes, this issue can be mitigated through government support and retraining programs.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question and maintain a clear focus on older workers’ employment difficulties. The technological gap is a relevant cause, and you explain how automation can reduce demand for some roles, using Amazon as an example. Your proposed measures—anti-discrimination action, tax incentives and computer-skills training—are also appropriate. However, the causes are narrower than the task invites: technology is the only main cause developed, while age bias is mentioned as a solution rather than explained as a cause. Some points, such as the effect of automated cold emails, are not clearly linked to the difficulty of finding good jobs. To strengthen the response, explain a second cause and develop the links between each cause and its effects.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on causes, a paragraph on solutions and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress logically, and signposting such as “One major reason,” “To deal with,” and “To conclude” helps readers follow the argument. The example about Amazon is placed appropriately after the explanation of automation. Some connections could be made more precise, however. The sentence about cold emails feels detached from the preceding point about packaging jobs, and “This would bridge the gap” has an unclear reference because it follows several proposed measures. Use clearer links to show which measure addresses which problem, and group related examples together to make the progression more consistently smooth.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of topic vocabulary, including “technological gap,” “monotonous and repetitive,” “tax incentives,” and “tech-savvy.” These choices communicate the main ideas and show some willingness to use less common language. At times, however, word choice or collocation is imprecise: “reasonable employment” is not the most natural way to describe suitable work, and “cost of payments to labours” is awkward. “Strict action against age discrimination at jobs” is also less idiomatic than a phrase such as enforcing workplace protections against age discrimination. Aim for more precise, natural combinations and avoid repeating broad terms such as “older people” when “older workers” would fit the context. This would make the argument sound more fluent and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including a relative clause in “older individuals who are not updated” and a subordinate clause beginning “although” in the conclusion. Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors are present. For example, “The rapid advancements in AI has changed” has a subject–verb agreement error; “AI-automated software are” also needs agreement, and “start initiative” is missing an article or plural form. The sentence beginning “Investment in this technology…” would be clearer with punctuation before “leading to,” and the final long sentence in the solutions paragraph is difficult to control. Check agreement, articles and sentence boundaries, and revise longer sentences so that each relationship between ideas is grammatically clear.
