Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response makes an attempt to discuss both causes and solutions, but the ideas are difficult to identify and are not clearly connected to the question. The opening refers to the difficulty of getting jobs, yet the body does not explain specific causes such as age discrimination, outdated skills, or employers’ assumptions. The paragraph beginning “As well as the main solution” appears to suggest that older workers may work slowly or struggle with tasks, but this is unclear and does not offer a practical measure to address the problem. The conclusion repeats unclear points rather than summarising a position. To improve, state one or two clear causes and propose realistic measures, explaining how each would help older applicants find suitable work.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
There is a basic attempt at paragraphing, with an introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion, and linking expressions such as “However,” “Additionally” and “In order to recapitulate.” However, the ideas do not progress in a clear sequence: the first body paragraph shifts between older workers’ experience, applying abroad, interviews and helping colleagues without showing how these points form a cause. The solution paragraph is also hard to follow, and the conclusion introduces another unclear cause. Some linking phrases are used mechanically rather than to show a precise relationship. Plan each paragraph around one main point, then use clear topic sentences and connect each example directly to that point.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses some vocabulary relevant to employment, including “experience,” “qualification,” “companies” and “office,” so the general topic is recognisable. However, the range is basic and several word choices or collocations make the intended meaning difficult to understand, as in “the main cause of this essay,” “get the jobs of their experience” and “worker of company.” Spelling errors such as “compinies,” “intervievewer” and “slowely” also reduce clarity. Aim to use precise phrases for the task, such as “age discrimination,” “recruitment decisions” and “workplace training,” and check spelling and common word combinations. This would make the argument clearer without requiring unnecessarily advanced vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The response attempts both simple and longer sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “when,” “because” and “and.” However, control is limited, and errors frequently make relationships between ideas unclear. For example, “it can very difficult” is missing a verb, while “people up to the age of 50 to got” has an incorrect verb form and does not express the task’s age group accurately. There are also problems with articles, agreement and sentence construction in phrases such as “the intervievewer check the all qualification” and “they have a lot of experience.” Punctuation spacing is inconsistent. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then add subordinate clauses while checking verb forms, articles and subject–verb agreement.
