IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries, it can be very difficult for people over the age of 50 to get good jobs, despite their experience.

What do you think are the causes of this problem, and what measures could be taken to solve it?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Old age comes with experiences. But in many countries this experience is not helpful for a 50-year-old to get a good job. The reason for this trend can be attributed for a few critical factors.

Firstly, it can be diminished energy levels or capabilities. Ageing comes with its own physical and physiological challenges. These can limit a person's mobility and endurance in seemingly normal circumstances. My 52-year-old father can hardly match my pace during entirety of our daily run. This drawback can limit work opportunities that are physically demanding, like running outdoor errands or travelling long distances by changing multiple transport systems.

Secondly, lack of intellectual and creative flexibility can hinder professional and intra-team relationships. Many successful individuals prefer to follow the same rubric in new environments. While this experience is valuable, innovative and younger generations bring new perspectives to growth which may be disagreeable to older colleagues. In those cases, startups or companies with a younger demographic in their staff may avoid such appointments to reduces instances of friction in the teams.

The solution does not lie in hiring only younger or like minded people, but for such individuals to assess and learn changes a certain industry is facing, to grow with it. Understanding the changes allows them to efficiently navigate intellectual workplace differences. While biology of a human cannot be changed, targeted job roles can. Hiring experienced individuals as mentors and guides to growth for businesses, can yield positive results for the companies.

In the end, I believe there is a need to transform our perspectives --- towards hiring older people and towards changing industry dynamics --- to ensure a welcoming and comfortable work environment for all.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address both causes and possible measures, and your position is clear: older workers should be considered for suitable roles and supported in adapting to changing industries. The discussion of physical demands is illustrated with your father’s running pace, while the point about established work habits and younger colleagues offers a second relevant cause. The mentoring proposal is also a practical measure. These ideas are extended and supported sufficiently for a clear response, although some claims are broad—for example, that startups may avoid older applicants to prevent team friction. The solutions could be developed more fully by explaining how employers or governments might provide retraining or reduce age-based bias. More specific support for the causes would also make the argument more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear progression: an introduction, two paragraphs explaining causes, a paragraph proposing measures, and a concluding position. Sequencing signals such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “The solution” make the structure easy to follow, and the final paragraph returns to the central issue. Connections within paragraphs are generally logical, including the link between physical limitations and demanding jobs. At times, however, the progression is a little abrupt: the discussion moves from individual adaptability to mentoring without fully explaining how the latter addresses the earlier causes. Some linking phrases, such as “In the end,” are predictable. To strengthen cohesion, make the relationship between each proposed measure and the specific problem it solves more explicit, and use referencing to connect ideas rather than relying mainly on signposting.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You use a sufficiently varied vocabulary to discuss employment and ageing, including “mobility and endurance,” “innovative,” “demographic,” and “industry dynamics.” These choices show awareness of a suitably formal register, and the meaning remains clear throughout. There are occasional imprecise or unnatural expressions, however. “The reason for this trend can be attributed for” uses an unsuitable preposition and redundant phrasing; “rubric” is not the most natural word for established workplace methods; and “appointments” is less precise than “hires” in this context. “Comfortable work environment” also does not quite capture the broader idea of an inclusive workplace. Aim for more natural collocations and precise terms, especially when describing recruitment and workplace practices, while retaining the range already demonstrated.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional and relative clauses, as in “While this experience is valuable…” and “which may be disagreeable to older colleagues.” Many sentences are clear and controlled, and punctuation generally supports the meaning. Some grammatical errors remain, which is why accuracy is not yet consistently strong. For example, “attributed for” should be “attributed to,” and “to reduces instances” should be “to reduce instances.” In “for such individuals to assess and learn changes,” the construction is awkward and the object relationship is unclear; a clearer structure would be “for such individuals to assess and adapt to changes.” Review verb patterns, prepositions, and sentence construction, particularly in longer sentences. This would help you retain your structural variety while improving accuracy.
