IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries, it can be very difficult for people over the age of 50 to get good jobs, despite their experience.

What do you think are the causes of this problem, and what measures could be taken to solve it?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In some countries, generally, young people are preffered for jobs than elder people despite of experiences. This usually occurs because young adults have more potential and energy than older ones. Young adults could be capable of doing most of the things actively without any problems while older face problems and should be assigned work convinient to them. Other reason could be the increasing age and retairement time and it is hard to cooperate with older people.

Companies usually prefer people of age less than 50, because they are more passionate and active compared to people over 50. Young adults are easy to cooperate work with. They only focus on main project rather than questioning on the other side things, which can be usually seen in older ones. Older people are hard to cooperate and they ask unnecessary questions. Young adults are more active and can work for longer years compared to people with age more than fifty.

People usually get retired after 60-70 years of age. If companies hire people of age 50 or more then they might have to cover their retairement amount. People generally face more health issues after age of 50, so companies have to spend more on their medical services according to the medical insurrance policies.

Young adults can serve companies for more period than the older people, so companies like to spent their time in training adults. For example, companies give training to new join employees which takes few months or weeks, after training employees are promoted to main work. Companies have to prepare their employees before assigning with work, so, they want to spent their time on employees who can serve them for higher period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify several relevant causes, including employers’ preference for younger workers, concerns about retirement and medical costs, and the time needed to train new staff. These points show an understanding of the problem, but the response only partially addresses the task: it asks for measures as well as causes, and no practical solutions are proposed. The explanation that older employees are “hard to cooperate” and ask “unnecessary questions” is also asserted broadly rather than supported with a balanced example or evidence. To strengthen the response, state a clear position and develop both parts of the question—for instance, explain how retraining, age-discrimination rules, or flexible roles could help experienced workers obtain suitable jobs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure, and the paragraphs generally group related points: employer preferences, retirement and health costs, and training. However, the overall progression is limited because the essay develops causes throughout and never moves to the requested solutions. Several ideas are repeated, particularly that younger workers are more active and can work for longer, while links between points are sometimes abrupt. Phrases such as “Other reason could be” and “For example” provide some signposting, but connections between claims are not consistently clear. Organise the essay around the two task parts, using one section for causes and another for measures, and make each paragraph advance a distinct point rather than restating earlier claims.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “retirement,” “medical services,” “insurance policies,” and “training.” This gives the response a minimally adequate range, but wording is often repetitive or imprecise, especially repeated references to “young adults” and “older people.” Some collocations and word forms are inaccurate, such as “cooperate work with,” “retirement amount,” and “spent their time in training adults”; spelling errors such as “preffered,” “convinient,” and “insurrance” are also noticeable. These choices sometimes make the reader pause to interpret the intended meaning. Build a more precise range for employment issues and check spelling and common word partnerships when editing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including conditional structures such as “If companies hire people of age 50 or more then they might have to cover…” This shows some effort to vary sentence forms, and the main message is usually understandable. However, the range remains limited, and errors occur frequently in sentence construction and grammatical patterns. For example, “despite of experiences” has an incorrect structure, while “Older face problems” lacks a clear noun phrase and “Companies have to prepare their employees before assigning with work” has an incomplete pattern. Articles, plurals, and prepositions also need attention. Practise building accurate complex sentences with because, although, and if, then proofread each sentence for a complete subject and verb.
