IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries, it can be very difficult for people over the age of 50 to get good jobs, despite their experience.

What do you think are the causes of this problem, and what measures could be taken to solve it?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays, the individuals over 50 years feel dificulties in finding jobs even if they have experience. Th major reason behind this scenario is most of the jobs require physical skills and multi-tasking capabilities. To solve this problem, companies should hire them for the tasks that require less physical work or hire them as senior advisors because of their experience.

Securing a job is a tough challenge in these days, especially for the individuals over 50 years. Because most of the jobs need physical skills and multi-tasking. Moreover, these companies hire youngsters by offering them less salary packages. For instacne, many pharmaceutical firms in Pakistan hire fresh microbiologist on 20 thousand salary packages, as experience person demands more salaries along with some other benefits such as transportation.

This problem can be overcome by hiring these individuals on vacancies that require less will power such as advisors. The main reason behind this due to these people have a lot of experience related to the specific field. Furthermore, they can advocate and supervise fresh employees. For example, Dairylac is an animal feed industry in which some individuals retired as labourers. But the company hired them again as senior advisors and made teams of fresh labour that work under their supervision.

In conclusion, the main reason behind the aged people not getting employment in some countries is due to the physical and multi- task requirements in most jobs. However, this challenge can be tackle by appointing them as supervisors on those seats that require less physical work.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question by identifying physical demands and employers’ preference for lower-paid younger workers as causes, then proposing less physically demanding roles and senior-adviser positions. The examples from pharmaceutical firms in Pakistan and Dairylac make the discussion relevant and help illustrate your ideas. However, the causes are not explored equally: the point about physical skills is stated broadly, with little explanation of which jobs or requirements create the barrier. The solutions also focus mainly on reassignment and supervision, without considering other measures such as retraining or flexible working arrangements. Develop each cause-and-solution link more fully and explain how the proposed measures would improve older applicants’ access to good jobs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for causes and solutions, and a conclusion that restates the main points. This gives the reader an overall route through the argument. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear or repetitive. The opening repeats the difficulty of finding work, and the conclusion largely repeats the introduction rather than drawing the discussion together. Some links are mechanical, such as “Moreover” and “Furthermore,” while “The main reason behind this” does not clearly connect the experience point to the proposed solution. Use clearer topic sentences and make each sentence build on the previous one, with references that identify exactly which idea is being discussed.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “physical skills,” “salary packages,” “senior advisors,” and “supervise,” and the examples show an attempt to discuss employment in specific terms. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations sound unnatural, which sometimes makes the meaning less precise. For instance, “less will power” does not mean less physically demanding, and “on vacancies” is not a natural way to describe assigning people to roles. There are also spelling errors such as “dificulties,” “instacne,” and “Th.” Aim for more precise employment vocabulary and check spelling carefully; this will make your ideas clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause in “even if they have experience” and a relative clause in “tasks that require less physical work.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but errors in sentence construction and verb forms recur. For example, “Because most of the jobs need physical skills and multi-tasking” is a fragment, while “this challenge can be tackle” has an incorrect verb form. The phrase “The main reason behind this due to these people have” also combines structures incorrectly. Practise forming complete sentences and checking subject–verb patterns, articles, and verb forms. Greater accuracy in these areas would make your reasoning easier to follow.
