IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries, it can be very difficult for people over the age of 50 to get good jobs, despite their experience.
What do you think are the causes of this problem, and what measures could be taken to solve it?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE CAUSES OF THIS PROBLEM?
In many countries, it is difficult for older people to find a good job at the age of 50 and above 50. In my opinion, the cause of this problem is their age because many managers think that older people cannot do work better because they are older. They think that only young people can do work better.
Another reason for this is the changing of technology and daily updates of AI in many countries. Managers think that they are not able to use AI tools in work.
• Ageism and Bias: Many hiring managers hold false beliefs that older workers lack energy, resist new ideas, or will retire soon.
• Technological Shifts: Fast-paced updates in software, AI, and digital tools make some employers think older applicants cannot learn fast enough.
• Cost Pressures: Experienced workers expect higher pay based on their past success, while firms often want to save money by hiring fresh graduates at base wages.
• Perceived Physical Limits: Jobs requiring long hours or heavy physical strain lead employers to pick younger candidates.
WHAT MEASURES COULD BE TAKEN TO SOLVE IT?
Companies should provide many facilities for elder people to do such jobs.
Strict managers should be removed from the higher positions and new minded people soud be on the chairs of managers.
• Facilties for older people to get job.
OWN OPINION.
In my opinion, companies should provide facilities for older people.
When I will become a great person then I will provide such facilities for them so that they can get a great job in organizations and work for their family.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify relevant causes, including age-based assumptions and employers’ concerns about workers’ ability to use AI, and you also mention possible support from companies. However, the response only partially develops the task: the causes are listed, but the measures are vague and not explained. For example, “provide many facilities” does not specify whether this means training, flexible hours, or workplace adaptations. The suggestion to replace “strict managers” with “new minded people” is also unclear and does not explain how it would reduce discrimination. Your personal opinion is present, but the future promise about what you will do is not supported with a practical example or evidence. Develop each main point and explain how it addresses the problem.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response has visible sections for causes, measures, and your opinion, so the reader can identify the broad topics. However, ideas do not progress in a clear, connected argument. The bullet-point lists interrupt the essay and repeat points already made in the opening paragraphs, such as age bias and technology. The measures section is especially brief, and “Facilties for older people to get job” does not develop the preceding point. Linking is limited, with “Another reason” doing most of the work, while relationships between claims and examples are not made explicit. To improve, use connected paragraphs, group related ideas, and add transitions that show cause, consequence, and solution rather than relying on headings and lists.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “hiring managers,” “technological shifts,” “AI tools,” and “base wages,” which helps communicate the main subject. However, the range is limited and several expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “provide many facilities,” “new minded people,” and “do work better.” There are also spelling errors in “Facilties” and “soud,” which reduce accuracy. Some bullet-point phrases sound like notes rather than developed essay language. Aim for precise terms for proposed measures, such as “retraining programmes,” “age-inclusive recruitment,” or “flexible working arrangements,” and check spelling and collocations. This would make your ideas clearer and more appropriate to an academic discussion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You communicate basic ideas using mostly simple sentences, and some longer structures are attempted, such as “Managers think that they are not able to use AI tools in work.” However, the range of sentence forms is limited, and errors occur often enough to affect fluency. Examples include “at the age of 50 and above 50,” “When I will become a great person,” and “Strict managers should be removed … and new minded people soud be on the chairs of managers.” The final sentence also uses an awkward future-time construction; after “when,” use the present simple for a future situation (“When I become…”). Practise accurate complex sentences with clear subjects and verbs, and check tense, articles, and sentence punctuation.
